Critical review: effect of dietary fiber intake on uric acid and creatinine levels in adult patients on hemodialysis
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2024-06-20) Paredes Vargas, Zoila Pamela; Ponce Castillo, Diana Antonia
Although hemodialysis successfully prolongs and improves the quality of life for renal patients, fiber intake also affects this process by reducing toxins (urea, creatinine, etc.). The clinical question was: What is the effect of dietary fiber intake on uric acid and creatinine levels in adult patients on hemodialysis? Evidence-based nutrition (NuBE) methodology was used. The search for information was conducted in PUBMED, MEDLINE, SCIELO, SCOPUS, and SCIENCE DIRECT, yielding 22 articles, 9 of which were selected for evaluation using the CASPE tool. The randomized clinical trial titled "Effects of Fermentable High Fiber Diet Supplementation on Gut-Derived and Conventional Nitrogenous Products in Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients" was chosen, with a level of evidence AI and a strong recommendation grade. The critical commentary concluded that a diet enriched with fermentable fiber is suitable for maintenance dialysis patients due to its safety and absence of significant side effects, and it significantly reduces creatinine and uric acid levels.

Effect of dietary fiber on the reduction of uremic toxins in adult patients with chronic kidney disease
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-05-25) Laura Ticona, María Elena; León Cáceres, Johanna del Carmen
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) develops due to gradual loss of kidney function. In CKD, a deficiency in dietary fiber intake is a factor that leads to intestinal dysbiosis contributing to uremic toxicity. The present secondary research aims to determine the effect of dietary fiber in reducing uremic toxins in adult patients with CKD. The Evidence-Based Nutrition (EBN) methodology was used. The information search was carried out in Pubmed, Scielo, Redalyc, finding 37 articles, 10 articles being selected, which have been evaluated by the CASPE critical reading tool, selecting the research entitled "The Role of Dietary Fiber Supplementation in Regulating Uremic Toxins in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials". The critical commentary allowed to conclude that dietary fiber supplementation decreased the levels of IS, pCS, BUN and AU in patients with CKD, so dietary fiber supplementation is recommended in patients with CKD.

Effectiveness of fiber intake to prevent colorectal cancer in adults
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2019-08-18) Silva Villajulca, Frida Liz; Alfaro Almonte, Edith Veronica; Gonzales Saldaña, Susan Haydee
Objective: Systematize the evidence about the effectiveness of fiber intake to prevent colorectal cancer in adults. Materials and Methods: It is a Systematic Review that structures the products of various investigations, recognizing the most salient to answer specific questions of daily work. The follow-up was directed to articles with full text submitted to a critical reading, the recommendation will be made using the GRADE system. Results: According to the results obtained from the systematic review carried out on ten scientific articles in the present study, these come from China (40%), followed by the United Kingdom (30%), Italy (10%), Malaysia (10%), Sweden (10%). of the articles are systematic reviews, followed by 40% (4) meta-analysis, randomized clinical trial 10% (1), cohort 10% (1) cases and controls 10% (1). Of the total of 10 articles reviewed, 100% (n=10) recommended fiber intake to prevent colorectal cancer in adults. Conclusions: of the total of 10 articles reviewed, 100% evidence the effectiveness of fiber intake to prevent colorectal cancer in adults.

Nutritional control on fiber consumption of older adults in the Magdalena del Mar health center, 2021.
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-04-18) Gutierrez Ovalle, Marybel Alejandrina; Mauricio Alza, Saby Marisol
Nutritional control to ensure adequate nutrient intake should be part of the nutritional care process at any age, with fiber intake being particularly important in older adults, especially in relation to constipation and digestive problems. A survey was conducted on 70 elderly individuals attending the Magdalena del Mar Health Center in Lima, Peru, in 2021. The survey included a validated 24-hour recall and information about their nutritional status. The average age of the elderly participants was 72.1 + 7 years, with an average weight of 66.8 + 13.6 kg, height 1.59 + 0.1 m, and BMI 26.3 + 4.4, with 44.3% being overweight. The Basal Energy Requirement and Total Energy Requirement were 1252.7 + 156.4 and 1377.9 + 171.9, respectively. The average fiber intake was 11.4 + 5.1 g/day, while the recommended intake was 13.7 + 1.7 g/day, achieving 83.9 + 39.5% of the required fiber intake. Regarding fiber consumption, only 27.1% of participants met the daily recommended intake. The quality of fiber showed differences between soluble and insoluble fiber based on sex. Among fiber-rich foods, only 31.4% consumed oats daily, 8.6% consumed legumes three times a week, 64.3% consumed fruits daily, and 2.9% drank fruit juices daily.
