Ítem Acceso abierto Antimicrobial activity of dental pastes with and without triclosan on Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175 strains: comparative in vitro study, Lima 2018(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2018-10-16) Trujillo Falcón, Soledad Violeta; Garavito Chang, Enna LucilaThe objective of this research was to determine the antimicrobial activity of toothpaste with and without triclosan on Streptococcus mutans. The sample size was determined by sample size calculation, and the strain studied was of the ATCC 25175 type. The sample consisted of 40 Petri dishes, each with 4 wells of 5 millimeters in diameter, where 0.05 milliliters of toothpaste was placed, and the evaluation was done at 24 and 48 hours. The study was experimental in vitro. Data were evaluated using the SPSS v22 statistical package, employing the ANOVA test and Tukey’s multiple comparisons test. The results showed that toothpaste with triclosan exhibited an antimicrobial activity of 41.05 ± 3.58 mm on Streptococcus mutans at 24 hours and 39.75 ± 3.32 mm at 48 hours, while toothpaste without triclosan showed antimicrobial activity of 39.00 ± 4.05 mm, 37.8 ± 5.15 mm, and 39.15 ± 3.87 mm at 24 hours and 36.80 ± 4.14 mm, 35.85 ± 4.84 mm, and 37.45 ± 3.72 mm at 48 hours. It was also found that at 24 hours, toothpaste with and without triclosan did not present statistically significant differences. It is concluded that both toothpaste with and without triclosan are effective antimicrobial agents against Streptococcus mutans.Ítem Acceso abierto In vitro antibacterial activity of Psidium guajava compared to 0.12% chlorhexidine on Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 25175) - 2019(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2021-05-17) Irigoyen Fuentes, Jacqueline Victoria; Torres Pariona, David ArturoObjective: To determine the antimicrobial activity in vitro of Psidium Guajava compared to 0.12% Chlorhexidine against Streptococcus Mutans. This is an applied, cross-sectional, and comparative study with an experimental design. The sample for each group consisted of 20 diffusion discs soaked in 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% ethanolic guava extract and 0.12% Chlorhexidine, placed on Mueller Hinton agar inoculated with S. Mutans strains. The inhibition halos were observed and measured after 24 hours. Central tendency measures and standard deviation were used for halo analysis, and hypothesis testing was conducted using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: The 5% guava extract (EEG) showed values of 12.20mm±0.77mm with a median of 12mm; 10% EEG showed 13.30mm±0.57mm with a median of 13mm; 15% EEG showed 14.30mm±0.66mm with a median of 14mm; 20% EEG showed 14.70mm±0.57mm with a median of 15mm, while 0.12% Chlorhexidine showed values of 15.0mm±0.79mm with a median of 15mm. It was found that 5% and 10% EEG showed statistically significant differences compared to Chlorhexidine (p<0.05), while 15% and 20% EEG did not show statistically significant differences (p>0.05). Conclusion: The 15% and 20% ethanolic guava extract exhibited antibacterial activity very similar to that of 0.12% Chlorhexidine against S. Mutans.Ítem Acceso abierto In vitro study of the inhibitory effect of the ethanolic extract of passiflora edulis on the streptococcus mutans strain carried out in Lima-Peru 2022(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-07-16) Ugaz Bustamante, Avril Cherish; Girano Castaños, Jorge AlbertoIn recent decades, there has been growing interest in natural therapies due to their various advantages, such as low cost and effectiveness for addressing a variety of health issues, including in the field of dentistry. The inhibitory effect of the ethanolic extract of Passiflora edulis on the Streptococcus mutans strain was evaluated. Antimicrobial activity was assessed using the disk diffusion method by measuring the growth diameter of the inhibition zone on Mueller-Hinton Agar plates with 5% blood; bacterial growth was halted compared to positive control groups. Finally, all relevant data collected were recorded in a laboratory sheet. Passiflora edulis showed inhibitory effects at different concentrations against the Streptococcus mutans strain. As concentrations dropped below 50%, inhibition halos decreased to 6mm, which was observed up to 48 hours of exposure. Inhibition halos of 24mm were found after 48 hours of exposure to 100% ethanolic extract of P. edulis on S. mutans. Passiflora edulis exhibited antimicrobial activity against S. mutans strains, suggesting the need for further investigation into this plant as an alternative to various anticariogenic products or irrigating agents currently available in the Peruvian market.
