Publicación Acceso abierto Cuantificación de betalainas y actividad hipoglucemiante del extracto hidroalcohólico de pulpa y de cáscara de Hylocereus monacanthus (pitahaya roja)(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2021-12-10) Balvín Esteban, Juana Iris; Huamán Labán, Kenni Yordan; Félix Véliz, Luis Miguel VisitaciónThe objective of this study was to quantify betalains in the aqueous extract (AE) and evaluate the hypoglycemic activity of the hydroalcoholic extract (HE) from the peel and pulp of H. monacanthus (red pitahaya) administered orally in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. 45 male Holtzman strain rats with a body weight of 100-130 g were used. The animals were distributed into nine groups: a negative control, a positive control, HE of pulp and peel (400, 500, and 600 mg/kg), and a group treated with glibenclamide (10 mg/kg). Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of alloxan (160 mg/kg), and glucose levels were measured with an Accu-Chek glucometer. Both the glibenclamide and the 600 mg/kg HE of H. monacanthus peel showed a hypoglycemic effect. However, the HE of the pulp showed no difference in effectiveness after 7 days of administration. The AE of the peel had a higher concentration of betalains. It is concluded that the HE of H. monacanthus (600 mg/kg oral dose) decreased blood glucose by 56% in alloxan-induced diabetic rats.
