The study population consisted of 1,078 patients and blood donors from blood groups A, AB, and A-, who visited the Blood Bank of the María Auxiliadora Hospital, providing a total of 303 blood samples. OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of blood subgroup A in blood donors and patients at the María Auxiliadora Hospital during the period from October to December 2016. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The determination of blood subgroup A was carried out using established techniques and procedures. The research is descriptive, cross-sectional, and observational. It was conducted at the María Auxiliadora Hospital from October to December 2016. RESULTS: The frequency of blood group A was determined as 78.3% in patients and 21.7% in donors. The frequency of patients with blood subgroups A1 is 86.59%, and A2 is 13.41%. The frequency of donors with blood subgroups A1 is 77.42%, and A2 is 22.58%. CONCLUSIONS: The frequency of blood subgroup A1 compared to the total of blood group A is 83% in both patients and donors. The frequency of blood subgroup A2 compared to the total of blood group A is 17% in both patients and donors.
