Ítem Acceso abierto Effectiveness of activated charcoal as a treatment for acute gastric poisoning(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2017-11-12) Flores Beltran, Erik Darwin; Matta Solis, Hernán HugoObjective: To analyze the evidence on the effectiveness of activated charcoal as a treatment for acute gastric poisoning. Methodology: This is an experimental, descriptive, observational, and retrospective systematic review. The search was restricted to full-text articles, and the selected articles underwent critical reading to evaluate their evidence grade using the GRADE method to assess the quality of evidence and strength of recommendations. Twelve articles were selected, with 66% from Spain (8), 16% from Denmark (2), the Dominican Republic (1), and Finland (1), respectively. Results: Of the 12 articles reviewed, 10/12 articles show that activated charcoal administered within the first hour after ingesting the drug reduced the effect on the drug by 48.5%, which was statistically significant. Conclusions: Activated charcoal is effective for managing gastric poisoning in adults when applied within the first hour.
