Their rational use is crucial to prevent resistance and side effects that diminish their value, which is why this study was proposed. Objective: To evaluate the drug utilization study of Ciprofloxacin in uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) in adult patients covered by the Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS) at the Vitarte Hospital, from July 2016 to June 2017. Methodology: A descriptive, observational, and retrospective study was conducted over a 12-month period, analyzing Ciprofloxacin consumption in uncomplicated UTI, Prescription-Indication criteria, and the Quality of Indication-Prescription. Results: A maximum Ciprofloxacin consumption of 2.2 DDD was observed in the study. Ciprofloxacin ranked second and fourth for prescription-indication in UTIs, and it was observed that 95.7% (202) of use was inappropriate. Conclusions: The drug utilization study of Ciprofloxacin 500 mg tablets in uncomplicated UTI revealed a growing consumption and a high percentage of inappropriate use.
