Lima, 2022.(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2023-12-13) Orellana Torres, Mariela; Vilchez Bellido, DinaThe objective of this study was to compare the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) for infection control in dental assistants before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: An observational, cross-sectional, and descriptive study was conducted, with a sample of 101 dental assistants. A previously validated online questionnaire with 56 questions was applied. Results: It was found that before the pandemic, 83.2% of dental assistants used protective equipment, while 16.8% did not. On the other hand, during the pandemic, 100% of dental assistants used protective equipment, with the highest percentage corresponding to females (94.1%) and the age group of 41 to 60 years (48.5%). It was observed that, of the total dental assistants who used PPE before the pandemic, 5% worked in the public sector and 78.2% in the private sector. Finally, among the total dental assistants who used PPE before the pandemic, 64.3% worked in general dentistry, followed by 6.9% in aesthetic dentistry. Conclusion: It was evident that during the pandemic, the use of personal protective equipment increased among older dental assistants, females, and those in the private sector, with a higher prevalence in general dentistry.
