(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-02-11) Allcca Alfaro, Beltrán; Bohórquez Medina, Andrea Lisbet
Prostate cancer is a condition that affects men, with high mortality rates worldwide. Lycopene consumption, a carotenoid, could be beneficial in preventing cellular damage and, therefore, reducing the risk of prostate cancer. The purpose of this secondary study was to critically analyze the impact of lycopene supplementation on inflammatory markers (PCR, IL) in prostate cancer patients, to determine its effect on reducing mortality. The Evidence-Based Nutrition (NuBE) methodology was used. After researching in PUBMED, SCIENCE DIRECT, and COCHRANE, 49 articles were found, of which 10 were reviewed using the critical reading tool Caspe, resulting in the selection of a multiethnic cohort article. It was concluded that lycopene consumption is related to the reduction of inflammatory factors and, therefore, mortality, which can be achieved through the intake of lycopene supplements or foods that contain it. Further research on lycopene and its anti-inflammatory effects on biomarkers is needed.

Critical review: effect of omega-3 supplementation on the reduction of symptoms of arthralgia in adult women with breast cancer
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2024-06-20) Menacho Flores, Rosario Nora; Bohórquez Medina, Andrea Lisbet
Omega-3 fatty acids play a role in nutritional treatment due to their therapeutic effect on cancer, mainly because of their anti-inflammatory properties, and should be incorporated into the diet. Patients undergoing hormone therapy with aromatase inhibitors for hormone-positive breast cancer are more likely to experience arthralgia, leading to early treatment interruption. The objective was to determine the effect of Omega-3 supplementation on improving arthralgia symptoms in these patients. Information was searched on PUBMED, COCHRANE, and SCIENCE DIRECT, finding 32 articles, 10 of which were evaluated using the CASPE critical reading tool. Finally, a systematic review and network meta-analysis were selected, with a level of evidence AI and a strong recommendation grade. The critical discussion concluded that taking Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) supplements, on average 3.3g/day with a 40:20 EPA/DHA ratio for 24 weeks, reduced the worst pain scale, though no significant difference was found compared to placebo or other treatments. The risk of side effects was low in breast cancer patients with arthralgia.

Critical review: use of specific oral nutritional supplementation in patients undergoing hemodialysis
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2023-05-04) De la Cruz Rumaldo, Emelda; León Cáceres, Johanna del Carmen
The objective of this research was to make a professional critical comment on the use of oral nutritional supplementation in patients undergoing hemodialysis from the selected scientific article. To answer the established clinical question: What is the effect of using kidney-specific oral supplementation (RS-ONS) in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease who undergo hemodialysis? In the present study, we worked with the methodology based on the five phases of Nutrition, better known as Evidence-Based Nutrition (NUBE). The Spanish Critical Apprasaisal Skills Program (CASPE) tool was also applied. Which allowed the articles to be reviewed for subsequent evaluation in reference to the published study. In the systematic search, the following search engines were used: Medwave, Scielo, PubMed, Springer, Redalyc, Sage Journals. A total of 15 scientific articles were selected. Selecting the article: Long-term oral nutrition supplementation improves outcomes in malnourished patients with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis. Which is a Controlled Clinical Trial with a level AI and the degree of recommendation is STRONG. The critical comment allowed us to conclude that the selected clinical trial mentions that there is sufficient evidence to indicate that consuming RS-ONS improves serum albumin and anthropometric measurements, as well as reduces the dose of EPO, in patients with CKD. Thus, consuming RS-ONS improves the nutrition and inflammatory status of CKD patients, suggesting the development of an approach to detect minor signs of malnutrition early as well as a reasonable treatment strategy.

Effect of omega 3 in the treatment and evolution of the patient with covid-19
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-04-22) Ponce Urquia, Xavier Franckling; Bohórquez Medina, Andrea Lisbet
COVID-19 is a disease that is now considered a pandemic caused by the recent type of coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2 and represents a major threat to medicine in all countries. This virus can be transmitted between people through respiratory droplets, fomites and contact. Complications from COVID-19 represent 10-15% of all cases, and can lead to the person being admitted to the ICU and are often fatal. The mortality rate for COVID-19 is 2% and the hospital mortality rate is approximately 10%. Although corticosteroids, antiviral therapy and mechanical respiratory support have been used for treatment, there is still no specialized treatment for COVID-19 to date. The present research aimed to discover whether Omega-3 supplementation in the diet can reinforce the treatment and evolution of the population with COVID-19. The critical commentary led to the conclusion that omega-3 supplementation should be considered as a treatment in cases of COVID-19, since everything indicates that its action is extremely beneficial; however, more research is needed to definitively determine the efficacy of omega-3 against COVID-19.
