Physical activity and cognitive deterioration in the elderly of the United Hearts Club of the César López Silva Maternal and Child Center in Villa El Salvador, 2022.
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-08-07) Montero Zamora, Consuelo Leovany; Cárdenas de Fernández, María Hilda
Older adults, within the aging process, suffer from deterioration of organic, mental and intellectual functions, affecting their normal performance, in the family environment and in their environment. They generally lead a sedentary life or reduce their physical activity, being vulnerable to the appearance of chronic degenerative diseases. Physical activity is one of the recognized pillars for healthy aging, and it also reduces the risk of chronic diseases or premature death. Cognitive impairment is a silent problem, difficult to identify. Therefore, the use of short, easy-to-use and interpret screening instruments is essential for early diagnosis and timely intervention. Objective: To determine the relationship between the level of physical activity and cognitive impairment in older adults at the Corazones Unidos Club of the Maternal and Child Center of Villa El Salvador. The hypothetical-deductive method will be used, with a quantitative and cross-sectional approach. The population is older adults belonging to the Club. The instruments to be used are the IPAQ Questionnaire (WHO) to measure the level of physical activity and the Pfeiffer Questionnaire (SMPS) to assess cognitive impairment. The result aims to demonstrate that physical activity has an inverse relationship with cognitive impairment.

Risk of falls and its relationship with cognitive impairment in older adults at the Centro Medic Polyclinic, 2022
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-11-07) Balcázar Castillo, Oscar Alejandro; Vera Arriola, Juan Américo
The number of older adults is expected to approach 25% of the population in our continent. Aging produces changes in strength, trophism, tone, balance, among others, which increase the risk of falls in older adults. Approximately 50% of older adults experience at least one fall per year, with nearly half falling more than once. In Latin America, the proportion of older adults who suffer falls annually is around 30%. Older adults also experience cognitive decline. Literature shows that this condition can increase the likelihood of disability, as well as increase mortality and healthcare utilization. Objective: To determine the relationship between cognitive decline and fall risk in older adults. An observational, correlational, and cross-sectional study was conducted with 85 older adults. The Tinetti Scale and Pfeiffer Questionnaire were used. Results: A higher proportion of female adults (51.8%) with an average age of 78 years. Most older adults were at low risk for falls (45.9%) and had normal cognitive function (45.9%). It was concluded that there is a statistically significant relationship between cognitive decline and fall risk (p=0.000).
