(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2015) Bustamante Mendoza, María Luz del Carmen; Flores Castillo, Nora Liz; Chávez Cachay, Esther
Objective: To determine the level of burnout syndrome in nursing staff and its correlation with the sociodemographic characteristics of the nursing staff at the Geronto-Geriatric Residential Care Center Ignacia Rodulfa Vda. de Canevaro during April and May of 2015. Methodology: A quantitative, relational, cross-sectional study. The population consisted of 72 nursing team members, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) was applied to measure burnout syndrome levels in its three subscales: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. Sociodemographic characteristics included age, sex, marital status, employment situation, length of service, number of jobs, and number of children. Results: 91.7% of the nursing staff had a low level of emotional exhaustion, 79.2% had a low level of depersonalization, and 51.4% showed a tendency towards a medium to high level in the personal accomplishment subscale. Sociodemographic data revealed that 68% were over 41 years old, 90.3% were female, 47.2% were married, 51.4% were permanent staff, 58.3% had over 9 years of service, 41.7% had 2 children, and 62.5% worked in a single institution. Conclusions: A direct correlation exists between length of service and burnout syndrome levels, with a significance level of 0.59; a significant bilateral relationship was also found between burnout syndrome and the sociodemographic characteristics of employment situation and number of jobs.
