Ítem Acceso abierto Effectiveness of neuromuscular electrical stimulation as a nursing intervention in critically ill patients in the intensive care unit(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2019-10-13) Alva Ayras, Jennifer Vanessa; Bullon Rupay, Yaquelin Juneth; Uturunco Vera, Milagros LizbethObjective: To systematize evidence on the effectiveness of neuromuscular electrical stimulation as a nursing intervention for critically ill patients in the intensive care unit. Materials and Methods: A systematic review was conducted using a standard reference for health evidence synthesis. The population consisted of 15 articles, from which 10 were selected based on criteria such as evidence being no older than 10 years and high or low-quality evidence. These articles were analyzed using the GRADE scale to determine their strength and quality of evidence. Results: This systematic review includes 10 pieces of evidence related to the effectiveness of neuromuscular electrical stimulation in critically ill patients. The study helps advance research on reducing muscle weakness and physical disability in survivors of critical illness. 90% of the evidence comes from the UK, Spain, Belgium, Ireland, Switzerland, Canada, Greece, and 20% from Brazil. 90% of studies indicate that neuromuscular electrical stimulation is feasible, effective, and beneficial in reducing muscle loss and skeletal muscle strength in critically ill patients. Conclusion: In 9 out of 10 articles reviewed, 90% (9/10) show that neuromuscular electrical stimulation helps reduce muscle mass and strength loss in ICU patients, being a necessary intervention to address this issue.
