Ítem Acceso abierto Effectiveness of phacoemulsification versus extracapsular extraction in patients with cataracts(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2018-11-25) Mamani Huaman, Rosa Luz; Ferrández Pinto, Bertha; Calsin Pacompia, WilmerObjective: To analyze and systematize the evidence on the effectiveness of phacoemulsification versus extracapsular extraction in patients with cataracts. Materials and Methods: The type of research was quantitative, and the study design was a systematic review. The population consisted of 37 articles, and the sample was 10 scientific articles. The instrument was a database search: Scielo, Library of Medicine, Virtual Health Library, Venezuelan Society of Ophthalmology, Omicsonline, Journal of Health Research and Reviews in Developing Countries, Journal of Medicine and Biomedical Research, PubMed, and Epistemonikos. The articles were evaluated using the GRADE method, which assessed the quality of evidence and the strength of recommendations. Results: Of the articles, 40% were from Cuba, 10% from Malaysia, and 50% from Nigeria, Egypt, Venezuela, Spain, and the U.S., each corresponding to 10%. Regarding the study designs, 90% were clinical trials and 10% were systematic reviews. Conclusions: 70% of the studies related to phacoemulsification were effective because visual acuity recovery was faster, less astigmatism was induced, smaller corneal incisions were made, fewer post-surgical and intra-surgical complications occurred, and there was an adequate improvement response. 20% concluded that both surgical techniques were not effective because they caused comparable damage to the corneal endothelium, and 10% concluded that both phacoemulsification and extracapsular extraction were effective because visual acuity and complications did not differ significantly.
