Ítem Acceso abierto Evaluation of the concentration of sugars in infant formulas of continuation marketed in Lima. Peru-2019(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2020-08-04) Munives Marcos, Angélica Karina; Arauzo Sinchez, Carlos JavierObjective: To evaluate the concentration of sugars in follow-up infant formulas marketed in Lima, Peru, in 2019. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 5 commercial brands of follow-up infant formulas to determine the concentration of sugars: lactose, sucrose, glucose, fructose, and maltose through High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) at a specialized laboratory to measure these standards. The sum of individual sugars allowed for the determination of total sugar concentration. All data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Laboratory results showed the highest concentration of sugars in the Similac 2 brand, followed by the NAN 2 brand, and the lowest concentration in Enfamil 2. Lactose was the predominant sugar in all infant formulas, with high concentrations of sucrose found in Similac 2 and Lacti Kids Premium 2. Conclusions: All infant formulas showed a lower total sugar value compared to what was stated on the labels and nutritional tables provided by the manufacturer.
