The species Hypericum silenoides Juss "Canchalagua," native to the Cajamarca department, is a plant with various medicinal applications. The Objective of this research was to determine the antibacterial activity against Cutibacterium acnes and the antioxidant activity of the hydroalcoholic extracts from the leaves, flowers, stem, and root of Hypericum silenoides Juss, 'Canchalagua.' The Method employed consisted of preparing the hydroalcoholic extracts of the leaves, flowers, stem, and root of Hypericum silenoides Juss, followed by a solubility test and qualitative analysis to identify the metabolites. To determine the antibacterial activity against Cutibacterium acnes (ATCC 6919), the disk diffusion method was performed. For antioxidant activity, the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical method was used for evaluation. Results: The microbiological assay showed that the positive control group presented a larger diameter of the inhibition halo compared to the plant species extracts studied. The hydroalcoholic extract of the flowers showed greater antibacterial activity compared to the extracts of the leaves, stem, and root. The hydroalcoholic extract of the leaves of Hypericum silenoides Juss, 'Canchalagua,' presented the highest antioxidant activity with an IC50 of 54.53 µg/mL, followed by the hydroalcoholic extract of the flowers with an IC50 of 57.05 µg/mL, compared to the control (Trolox) with a p < 0.05. Conclusion: The hydroalcoholic extracts of the leaves, flowers, stem, and root have antibacterial activity against Cutibacterium acnes and antioxidant activity.

(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2023-11-21) Damian Chuquillanqui, Rusbelly Merliz; Leandro Avila, Pedro Armando; Ñañez del Pino, Daniel
The objective of this study was to determine the impact of the use of Hypericum perforatum (St. John’s Wort) on depressive symptoms in adults treated at the San José Market, Chorrillos, Lima. The study followed a deductive method, correlational level, cross-sectional design, quantitative approach, basic type, and non-experimental design. The sample consisted of 183 adults treated at the San José Market. As instruments, a registration form was used to analyze the use of Hypericum perforatum (St. John’s Wort), and a questionnaire was applied to evaluate depressive symptoms. Results: The analyzed sample showed that 35.0% were aged between 20 and 30 years, 57.9% were male, 35.0% had primary education, and 44.3% were single. It was also demonstrated that the use of Hypericum perforatum (St. John’s Wort) impacted the dimensions of depressive symptoms with a p-value of 0.000. Conclusion: The use of Hypericum perforatum (St. John’s Wort) has a positive and significant impact on depressive symptoms in adults treated at the San José Market, Chorrillos, Lima. These findings support the efficacy of this medicinal plant as a viable complementary option in the treatment of depression for those seeking additional therapeutic alternatives.
