Ítem Acceso abierto Association of individual characteristics of palatal roughness and gender in patients of the dental clinic for adults II of the Norbert Wiener private university 2018(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2020-12-02) Jara Pérez, Deri Osdali; Rojas Ortega, Raúl AntonioRugoscopy is a simple and reliable technique for human identification, as palatal ridges are unique, unchanging, and permanent; making it a good alternative when fingerprints are unavailable. The objective of the study was to determine individual characteristics of palatal ridges in patients from the Integral Clinic of Adults II at the Private University Norbert Wiener, 2018-II, using Dr. Silva's classification. The study design was observational, descriptive, prospective, and cross-sectional. The sample consisted of 202 maxillary models from patients at the Integral Clinic of Adults II, of the Private University Norbert Wiener, divided into 101 male and 101 female models. The standardized rugoscopic chart was used as a data collection tool. A total of 2,162 ridges were found, 1,068 in women and 1,094 in men. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference (p = 0.02) in straight ridges for women. In men, there were significant differences (p = 0.01, p = 0.001) in wavy and circular ridges. No significant differences were found in point, curved, and angular ridges in either gender. Women showed a higher frequency of wavy ridges (46.7%) and straight ridges (35.3%). Men showed a higher frequency of wavy ridges (51%) and straight ridges (30.3%). Comparing both genders, women had more straight, curved, and point ridges, while men had more wavy and compound circular ridges. It was concluded that there is an association between the characteristics of palatal ridges and gender.
