Ítem Acceso abierto Effectiveness of preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis in abdominal surgery to prevent postoperative infections(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2017-07-22) Arteaga Carlos, Jackeline; Gómez Gonzales, Walter EdgarMaterials and methods: This is a systematic review, observational and retrospective in nature. The 8 scientific articles on the effectiveness of preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis in abdominal surgery to prevent postoperative infections were found in the following databases: Medline, PubMed, and Cochrane Plus. All articles correspond to systematic reviews and meta-analyses, with 2 systematic reviews, 1 meta-analysis, 1 prospective observational study, and 1 retrospective observational study. Results: Among the 8 reviewed articles, 87.5% (n=7/8) clearly demonstrate that preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis in abdominal surgery is effective in preventing postoperative infections, using the following antibiotics: Cefazolin and Ceftriaxone. Conclusions: The reviewed studies provide evidence that preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis in abdominal surgery to prevent postoperative infections is effective, and its inclusion in clinical guidelines is recommended.
