Ítem Acceso abierto Efficacy of personal radioprotection in health professionals working in the interventional cardiology area.(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2018-07-08) Alzamora Gutarra, Susan Maricruz; Calsin Pacompia, WilmerObjective: To analyze and systematize evidence on the efficacy of personal radioprotection for healthcare professionals working in interventional cardiology. Materials and Methods: A systematic, observational, and retrospective review design was employed, utilizing databases including Eurointervention, Scielo, Elsevier, Cochrane Library, British Medical Journal, PubMed, Lancet, and Solaci. Of the total articles reviewed, 40% were from the USA and Chile, while 10% each originated from Switzerland, Cuba, Germany, Brazil, Turkey, and Colombia. Regarding study designs, 40% were clinical trials/controlled and descriptive/observational studies, 30% were systematic reviews, and 20% were prospective or quasi-experimental studies. Results: 80% of the studies demonstrate the efficacy of radioprotection measures in interventional cardiology. However, studies by Zett-Lobos C. and de Castro A. indicate that radioprotection measures such as leaded glasses provide protection below international dose recommendations. Conclusions: Radioprotection measures in interventional cardiology are effective in significantly reducing radiation exposure to operational staff. Lead and XPF capsules (barium-sulfide bismuth oxide bilayer) are key protective elements. However, 2 out of 10 studies reveal that radioprotection measures still exceed the ICRP annual dose limit recommendation of 20 mSv/year, reducing but not completely eliminating radiation exposure risks.
