    Mucosal thickening of the maxillary sinus associated with periapical lesion detected in digital panoramic radiographs of patients at the dental clinic of Norbert Wiener University, Lima 2019

    The objective of this research was to determine if there is a relationship between mucosal thickening of the maxillary sinus and periapical lesions detected in digital panoramic radiographs of patients from the Dental Clinic of Universidad Norbert Wiener, Lima 2019. This was an observational, retrospective, cross-sectional study with a relational level, which included a sample of 225 digital panoramic radiographs. The chi-square test was used to analyze the data. The results showed that of the total patients with mucosal thickening of the maxillary sinus, 48.9% had periapical lesions, with a statistically significant relationship (p≤0.05). Of the total patients, 61.8% had mucosal thickening of the maxillary sinus, while 38.2% did not. Furthermore, 30.2% of the patients had periapical lesions adjacent to the maxillary sinus. According to sex, 71.9% of the patients with mucosal thickening were female, showing a statistically significant relationship (p≤0.05). According to age, 48.9% of patients with mucosal thickening were aged 41 to 60 years, followed by 37.4% aged 20 to 40 years (p≤0.05). Of the total patients with mucosal thickening, 23.02% had unilateral thickening, while 76.98% had bilateral thickening. When relating the degree of mucosal thickening and adjacent periapical lesions, a significant relationship was found with severe mucosal thickening (p≤0.05). Conclusion: Mucosal thickening of the maxillary sinus is significantly related to adjacent periapical lesions (p=0.000).
