Ítem Acceso abierto Effect of prematurity as a risk factor for neonatal mortality(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2017-08-05) Oria Custodio, Elizabeth Lucia; Ramírez Castro, Yeni Liliana; Bonilla Asalde, César AntonioObjectives: To evaluate the evidence of the effect of prematurity as a risk factor for neonatal mortality. Materials and methods: This is a systematic review of 10 articles. One systematic review from Chile (10%), three cross-sectional studies (30%) from Brazil, Peru, and Mexico, three cohort studies (30%) from Hungary, Argentina, and Cuba, and three case-control studies (30%) from Venezuela, Argentina, and Chile were included. Results: The 10 articles reviewed revealed that 6 of them identified low birth weight, accounting for 43.7%, and gestational age less than 37 weeks, accounting for 41.5%, as key determinants for increased neonatal mortality in premature newborns. Additionally, risk factors such as lack of prenatal care, premature rupture of membranes, and maternal infections, which led to preterm births, were also identified. Conclusion: The analyzed articles determined that the effect of prematurity is demonstrated by low birth weight less than 1000 grams, gestational age less than 37 weeks, and lack of prenatal care, all of which are key risk factors that increase neonatal mortality rates.
