Factors of occupational low back pain in nursing staff in the Medicine services at Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen National Hospital

Low back pain represents a significant public health issue in societies due to its high prevalence, impact, magnitude, and socioeconomic repercussions, particularly affecting the working-age population. In this context, nursing staff constitutes an important group (representing approximately 60% of the human resources in hospital institutions) due to the specific working conditions, such as continuous service and the predominance of females in the profession. These factors give the issue a particular relevance. The aim of this study was to determine the factors related to occupational low back pain among nursing staff in the Medicine services of the Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen National Hospital. The study was quantitative, descriptive-comparative, and cross-sectional. The sample consisted of 41 nursing professionals from the Internal Medicine Service of the hospital. The instrument used was a questionnaire, which underwent content validity testing. The results indicate a prevalence of factors that contribute to low back pain: unfavorable environmental conditions, activities, and demands; as well as incorrect patient handling or lifting techniques. A moderate risk prevalence was found for the risk factor “forced positions and postures.”
