Ítem Acceso abierto Impact of malocclusions on self-esteem and the need for orthodontic treatment in adolescent patients treated at the ODAM dental clinic, Lima 2021.(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-04-05) Izaguirre Arregui, Carolina de las Mercedes; Céspedes Porras, JacquelineThe aim of this research was to determine the impact of malocclusions on self-esteem and the need for orthodontic treatment in adolescent patients attended at the ODAM dental clinic, Lima, 2021. A quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study design was used. The sample consisted of 93 patients aged 11 to 14 years, who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) was used to measure the severity of malocclusions and the clinical need for orthodontic treatment, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) was used to measure self-esteem, and the Aesthetic Component (AC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) was used to measure the need for orthodontic treatment according to the patient's perception. The results showed that most patients had some degree of malocclusion, with severe malocclusion being the most prevalent (67.7%). In terms of the distribution of malocclusion severity by age, very severe malocclusions were most commonly found at ages 13 and 14, and in terms of gender, malocclusions were more prevalent in females. Regarding self-esteem, two-thirds of the sample had high (46.2%) or medium (24.7%) self-esteem, while only 29.0% had low self-esteem. No statistically significant relationship was found between the severity of malocclusions and self-esteem level (p=0.809, p>0.05), nor between the severity of malocclusions and the need for orthodontic treatment as perceived by the adolescent patients (p=0.083, p>0.05).Ítem Acceso abierto Need for orthodontic treatment, psychosocial impact of dental aesthetics and quality of life in students aged 11 to 14 years in San José de Sisa, El Dorado Province, 2023(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2023-10-10) Rojas Bazán, Mireya Katherin; Garavito Chang, Enna LucilaThe purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the need for orthodontic treatment, the psychosocial impact of dental aesthetics, and quality of life in students aged 11 to 14 years in San José de Sisa, El Dorado Province, 2023. A quantitative, applied, correlational, and non-experimental study design was used, with a sample of 570 students aged 11 to 14 years from three educational institutions in San José de Sisa, located in El Dorado Province, San Martín department. A data collection form was used for the Orthodontic Treatment Need Index (INTO) at each educational institution, while the psychosocial impact of dental aesthetics was assessed using the PIDAQ questionnaire. The Child Perception Questionnaire (CPQ 11-14) was used for the quality of life variable, and dental caries were measured using the DMFT index. The results showed a strong relationship between the need for orthodontic treatment, the psychosocial impact of dental aesthetics, and quality of life, as the Pearson chi-square test value (0.00) was < 0.05. It was concluded that there is a relationship between the need for orthodontic treatment, the psychosocial impact of dental aesthetics, and quality of life in relation to oral health in students aged 11 to 14 years in San José de Sisa, El Dorado Province, 2023.Ítem Acceso abierto Severity of malocclusion and the need for treatment according to the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) in schoolchildren aged 12 to 16 years from the Fe y Alegría N° 53 School, Lima 2018(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2019-06-18) Cotrina Cubas, Sonia Deysi; Vergara Pinto, Brenda RoxanaDental malocclusion is an occlusal alteration, not considered a disease, and is conditioned by various ethnic and cultural traits, altering aesthetics and function. This makes it difficult to define and classify. The purpose of this research is to determine the frequency and severity of malocclusion and the need for treatment according to the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) in students aged 12 to 16 at Fe y Alegría School No. 53, Lima – 2018. Materials and Methods: This is a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study with 113 students aged 12 to 16, evaluated through an intraoral clinical examination using the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI). Data were collected, and a diagnostic team was used for the clinical examination. Results: It was determined that 51 (45.1%) students had "No abnormalities or mild malocclusion"; 27 (23.9%) students had "Manifest malocclusion"; 23 (20.4%) students had "Severe malocclusion"; and 12 (10.6%) students had "Very severe or disabling malocclusion." Additionally, when evaluating the prevalence of treatment needs for malocclusions from the mildest to the most severe, it was found that 51 (45.1%) students had "Unnecessary or slightly necessary"; 27 (23.9%) students had "Optional"; 23 (20.4%) students had "Highly desirable"; and 12 (10.6%) students had "Mandatory." Regarding the severity of malocclusions and the need for treatment based on age, statistically significant differences were found, while no significant differences were found by sex. Conclusions: It was concluded that the majority of individuals (45.1%) do not require orthodontic treatment.Ítem Acceso abierto Therapeutic practice and perception of orthodontic treatment of temporomandibular disorders in orthodontic graduates of a private university, Lima, Peru - 2022.(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-05-28) Félix Corrales, Cristina Angélica; Vilchez Bellido, DinaThe objective of this research was to establish the relationship between therapeutic practice and the perception of orthodontic treatment for temporomandibular disorders (TMD) among graduates of the orthodontic specialty. An observational relational study was conducted. The sample consisted of 61 graduates from the 2011-2019 period of the orthodontics and maxillofacial orthopedics specialty at Universidad Norbert Wiener. A survey was conducted, including a questionnaire with questions about the therapeutic practice of TMD, the perception of orthodontic treatment as therapy, prevention, and etiology of TMD, and the time since graduation from the specialty. The instrument was revalidated by expert judgment, a pilot test was conducted, and reliability was assessed through Cronbach’s alpha. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was performed, and associations were established using the chi-square test. It was found that there is a significant relationship between orthodontic therapeutic practice and the perception of orthodontic treatment as therapy for temporomandibular disorders (p=0.03). However, there is no significant relationship between orthodontic therapeutic practice and the perception of orthodontic treatment as prevention (50.98%) or etiology (57.38%) of temporomandibular disorders.
