Microabrasion efficacy on enamel surface pigmentation in deciduous teeth exposed to iron supplements: in vitro study, Lima – 2021
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-12-10) Sanchez Torres, Greis Haydee; Arauzo Sinchez, Carlos Javier
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of microabrasion on the surface pigmentation of enamel in deciduous teeth exposed to iron supplements. This is an experimental (in vitro), longitudinal, comparative study conducted on 40 upper incisors selected based on eligibility criteria, collected, and donated for academic purposes. All samples were cleaned with a toothbrush and distilled water and stored in a container with saline solution. The pigmentation changes were evaluated using variables such as brightness, chroma, and hue through a spectrophotometer (Vita Easyshade V), which recorded numerical values at three time intervals: initial, intermediate (before and after exposure to the iron supplement), and final after performing the microabrasion. The teeth were labeled from 1 to 40 and divided into two equal groups: G1: exposed to generic iron supplement (ferrous sulfate/oral solution 75mg/5ml) and Group 2: exposed to commercial iron supplement (Ferrimax/oral solution 20mg/ml). The iron supplements were selected for convenience. An initial measurement was taken with the spectrophotometer, and then the samples were immersed in a container with the iron supplement for 5 minutes on 3 alternating days. Between each interval, the teeth were washed and preserved in saline solution. After the 3 days, the values were measured again with the spectrophotometer, and all samples underwent dental microabrasion using pumice stone and 37% phosphoric acid with a prophylaxis brush for three applications in a single session. The results showed that the means (SD) at the three time intervals (initial, intermediate, and final) for brightness were 71.09 (9.49), 62.52 (12.13), 72.58 (8.38); for chroma, it was 51.33 (5.29), 46.71 (7.85), 46.93 (4.62); for hue, it was 80.46 (3.90), 79.82 (5.58), 83.53 (2.69). There were significant differences at the three time intervals for brightness (p=0.000), chroma (p=0.0001), and hue (p=0.000). Regarding the type of supplement, the means observed after exposure to iron and after microabrasion for brightness were: generic (54.18; 70.41), commercial (70.87; 74.74); chroma: generic (41.16; 44.60), commercial (52.25; 49.26); and hue: generic (79.83; 84.17), commercial (84.17; 82.88), showing a significant difference only in chroma (p=0.0008). It was concluded that dental microabrasion is effective in improving the surface pigmentation of enamel in deciduous teeth exposed to iron supplements, with the commercial iron supplement showing better aesthetic results than the generic iron supplement.

Pigmentation of teeth by immersion in artificial chicha morada after whitening with 35% hydrogen peroxide
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2021-07-05) Ibarra Costas, Robert Virgilio; Girano Castaños, Jorge Alberto
Objective: To determine the pigmentation of dental pieces immersed in artificial chicha morada after bleaching with 35% hydrogen peroxide. Materials and Methods: This study was experimental, prospective, longitudinal, and descriptive. The sample consisted of 48 extracted human teeth meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The sample size was determined using the formula for estimating proportions for a finite population (FISTERRA formula for quantitative variables). Each tooth underwent a bleaching process with 35% hydrogen peroxide, followed by immersion in artificial chicha morada for 30 minutes over 28 days. A database of color changes was created using a spectrophotometer. Results: In the control group (immersed in distilled water), the average luminosity range decreased from 88.30 to 83.41 over the bleaching and 28-day treatment period. In the treated group (immersed in artificial chicha morada), the average luminosity range decreased from 89.30 to 83.87 during the same period. Conclusions: A decreasing trend in luminosity was observed in both groups. The decrease occurred earlier in the treated group; however, by the end of the study, the control group reached similar luminosity levels as the treated group. The differences between the two groups were not statistically significant.
