The purpose of this study was to assess the consumption of Bixa orellana and benign prostatic disease among clients served at Botica Palacios, located in Moyobamba, San Martín, in 2025. The study was conducted cross-sectionally and correlationally, with a basic, quantitative approach that did not include experimentation. The sample, composed of 179 randomly selected individuals from a total of 335 men with BPH and over 40 years of age, was the community under study. For the research, a structured survey was used, consisting of two sections: one focused on sociodemographic data and consumption of the plant. The effects demonstrated a positive and statistically significant correlation between general consumption of Bixa orellana and BPH (rho = 0.690; p < 0.001). In addition, weak connections were found with specific dimensions such as the area used, the method of preparation, the duration and frequency of consumption, as well as the duration and severity of symptoms. It is concluded that, although the plant is frequently used in traditional practice, its consumption does not guarantee clear clinical benefits against BPH, making it necessary to continue with longitudinal research and clinical trials that evaluate its possible therapeutic effects.

Efecto curativo del extracto hidroalcohólico de hojas de Chuquiraga spinosa Less “intipasapra“ en la hiperplasia prostática benigna inducida por alcohol etílico en ratas
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2015) Mallma Tito, Maria Luz; Vega Espilco, Miguel Angel; Chávez Flores, Juana Elvira
Chuquiraga spinosa Less., belonging to the Asteraceae family, is traditionally used as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antifungal, and urinary tract analgesic. The present study was conducted to determine the curative effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of Chuquiraga spinosa Less. (“intipasapra”) leaves and to establish the median lethal dose (LD50). The species was collected in January 2015 in the community of Andamarca, at 3,550 m a.s.l., district of Carmen Salcedo, province of Lucanas, department of Ayacucho. Phytochemical analysis revealed phenolic compounds such as flavonoids and tannins, free amino groups, carbohydrates, reducing sugars, alkaloids, steroids and/or triterpenes, and steroidal saponins. The curative effect was determined by inducing benign prostatic hyperplasia with ethanol in Holtzmann rats; the most effective treatment was the hydroalcoholic leaf extract at a dose of 200 mg/kg. The LD50 was established at 5,000 mg/kg by intragastric administration in Mus musculus Balb/C53 mice. Histopathological sections of perfused organs showed no alterations in cardiac tissue, but mild damage was observed in the stomach, brain, and lungs. Chuquiraga spinosa Less. (“intipasapra”) exhibits a curative effect by intragastric administration in benign prostatic hyperplasia and is considered hepatotoxic and nephrotoxic at doses of 5,000 mg/kg body weight, according to this study.

In the present research work, the effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of fresh leaves of Mutisia acuminata R. & P. (“Chinchilcuma”) was evaluated in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) induced by ethyl alcohol in Holtzmann strain rats. To determine the secondary metabolites of this plant species, the hydroalcoholic extract of fresh leaves of Mutisia acuminata R. & P. was employed. The species was collected in January 2011 in the community of Huaruccña, located at 3200 meters above sea level, in the district of Coracora, province of Parinacochas, department of Ayacucho, Peru. A phytochemical study was conducted, including solubility tests, phytochemical analysis, and structural elucidation using spectroscopic methods (UV/Vis and IR), which revealed the presence of a secondary metabolite: a flavonoid of the flavonol type. To verify the effect of the hydroalcoholic extract, benign prostatic hyperplasia was induced in the experimental animals through ethyl alcohol administration for 65 days. Morphological parameters of the prostate gland showed that treatment with 150 mg/kg of the extract achieved 38.5% efficacy in reducing prostate weight, with results comparable to those obtained with finasteride at 5 mg/kg (36.5%) and Cefasabal® at 25 mg/kg (32.7%). Biochemical analysis of acid phosphatase indicated a reduction in the group treated with 150 mg/kg of extract (0.014 ng/dL) compared with the BPH group (0.017 ng/dL). Immunological analyses showed that the group treated with 150 mg/kg of extract had free testosterone levels of 0.9 pg/dL compared to 1.0 ng/dL in the BPH group, while prostate-specific antigen free (PSAL) levels were 0.005 ng/dL in the treated group versus 0.008 ng/dL in the BPH group. Histopathological sections of the group treated with 150 mg/kg of extract revealed fewer features of BPH, yielding results similar to those observed with the synthetic drugs Cefasabal® at 25 mg/kg and finasteride at 5 mg/kg.

The present research work aims to determine the relationship between the use of Tropaeolum tuberosum (mashua) and benign prostatic hyperplasia in residents of Lima from the department of Huancavelica in 2023. The methodology used was hypothetical-deductive, with a quantitative correlational approach, non-experimental design, and cross-sectional cut. The study was conducted with a sample of 200 participants over 35 years old in the city of Lima, to whom a 22-question questionnaire was applied. The results were processed using the statistical software SPSS version 25, applying hypothesis testing through Spearman’s correlation table. The results show that the use of Tropaeolum tuberosum (mashua) in benign prostatic hyperplasia has a favorable level. In the dimensions of nutrition, phytotherapy, urinary symptoms, and health, a good level of satisfaction was indicated, as the null hypothesis was rejected with a probability value (p = 0.01) lower than the significance level (0.05), showing that the correlation is significant at the 0.01 level. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis regarding the evaluation between both variables is accepted. Conclusion: The surveyed individuals demonstrated positive results regarding the use of Tropaeolum tuberosum (mashua) in traditional medicine and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
