Ítem Acceso abierto In vitro antibacterial activity of Psidium guajava compared to 0.12% chlorhexidine on Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 25175) - 2019(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2021-05-17) Irigoyen Fuentes, Jacqueline Victoria; Torres Pariona, David ArturoObjective: To determine the antimicrobial activity in vitro of Psidium Guajava compared to 0.12% Chlorhexidine against Streptococcus Mutans. This is an applied, cross-sectional, and comparative study with an experimental design. The sample for each group consisted of 20 diffusion discs soaked in 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% ethanolic guava extract and 0.12% Chlorhexidine, placed on Mueller Hinton agar inoculated with S. Mutans strains. The inhibition halos were observed and measured after 24 hours. Central tendency measures and standard deviation were used for halo analysis, and hypothesis testing was conducted using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: The 5% guava extract (EEG) showed values of 12.20mm±0.77mm with a median of 12mm; 10% EEG showed 13.30mm±0.57mm with a median of 13mm; 15% EEG showed 14.30mm±0.66mm with a median of 14mm; 20% EEG showed 14.70mm±0.57mm with a median of 15mm, while 0.12% Chlorhexidine showed values of 15.0mm±0.79mm with a median of 15mm. It was found that 5% and 10% EEG showed statistically significant differences compared to Chlorhexidine (p<0.05), while 15% and 20% EEG did not show statistically significant differences (p>0.05). Conclusion: The 15% and 20% ethanolic guava extract exhibited antibacterial activity very similar to that of 0.12% Chlorhexidine against S. Mutans.
