    Critical review: nutritional supplementation with selenium and/or vitamin “E“ in the functional improvement of the patient with prostate cancer

    The critical review presented below is titled: “Nutritional supplementation with Selenium and/or Vitamin E in the functional improvement of patients with Prostate Cancer”, which aimed to identify whether nutritional supplements such as selenium and/or vitamin E decrease the risk of prostate cancer in people over 45 years of age. The clinical question was: Can nutritional supplementation with Selenium and/or vitamin E produce any functional improvement in the patient with prostate cancer? The Evidence-Based Nutrition (NuBE) methodology was used. The information search was carried out in PUBMED/ MEDLINE, SCIELO, SCOPUS, SCIENCE DIRECT and WOS, 50 articles were found, 09 were selected that have been evaluated by the CASPE critical reading tool, finally selecting the systematic review and meta-analysis entitled: “ The association between Selenium and Prostate Cancer: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis”, which has a level of evidence A I and a high Grade of Recommendation. The critical commentary allowed us to conclude that selenium most likely has a protective role in the development of prostate cancer and its progression in advanced stages, which is why the administration of selenium supplements can be proposed for the prevention of prostate cancer. Unlike what was found with vitamin E supplementation, in which high doses could be associated with a greater risk of general mortality, taking into account that the daily amount can be easily obtained through diet.

    Revisión crítica: suplementación nutricional con selenio en la prevención y riesgo de cáncer de mama

    El Selenio desempeña funciones esenciales en el organismo y posee propiedades antioxidantes que podrían tener un potencial terapéutico en el tratamiento del cáncer de mama. La investigación secundaria actual, titulada como revisión crítica: “Los suplementos nutricionales con selenio en la prevención y/o tratamiento del cáncer de mama”, tuvo como propósito evaluar la eficacia de estos suplementos en el cáncer de mama, centrándonos específicamente en el Selenio. Para ello, utilizó el método de Nutrición Basada en Evidencia (NuBE). Se busca información en las bases de datos PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science – Core Collection, Web of Science – MEDLINE y EMBASE, encontrándose 1966 artículos, de los cuales se seleccionaron 8 publicados en los últimos 5 años, evaluados mediante la herramienta CASPE para lectura crítica. Por último, se eligió el estudio de cohorte titulado “Association between selenium intake and breast cancer risk: results from the Women's Health Initiative”, que tiene un nivel de evidencia B III y un Grado de Recomendación FUERTE, según el conocimiento del investigador. Gracias al comentario crítico pude llegar a la conclusión que la nueva evidencia sobre la influencia del Selenio en los desenlaces del cáncer de mama debe ser reconsiderada, pero es necesaria una síntesis de evidencia actualizada.
