(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2025-10-22) Estrella Fiestas, Yahaira Alejandra; Soriano La Rosa, Angeles Rubí; Cano Pérez, Carlos Alfredo
Objective. To analyze the factors associated with medication acquisition in older adults with chronic comorbidities (hypertension and diabetes mellitus) in Peru, using data from the Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES 2023). Methodology. An observational, cross-sectional and analytical study was conducted. Microdata from ENDES 2023 were used to identify adults aged 60 years or older with a diagnosis of hypertension and/or diabetes mellitus. A descriptive analysis of sociodemographic, health insurance, and treatment adherence variables was performed, followed by bivariate analysis using Pearson’s chi² test and multivariate analysis through binary logistic regression to estimate prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals. A significant level of 0.05 was established. Results. Most older adults acquired medications with a medical prescription, with no statistically significant differences according to sex, age, educational level, marital status, type of health insurance, or treatment adherence (p > 0.05 in all cases). The prevalence of hypertension was 30.2% and that of diabetes mellitus was 10.8%. Adjusted models did not show statistically significant associations between the analyzed variables and the practice of medication acquisition. Conclusion. Among older adults with hypertension and diabetes mellitus in Peru, medication acquisition is predominantly carried out through medical prescriptions, with no significant associations found with sociodemographic characteristics, type of health insurance, or treatment adherence

Lima-2024
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2026-04-16) Astuhuaman Gonzales, Veronikha Luz; Cano Pérez, Carlos Alfredo

(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2020-03-11) Cárdenas Carpio, Edith Reyna; Ramos Jaco, Antonio Guillermo
Previous studies indicate that self-medication is deeply rooted in the Peruvian population, in both urban and rural areas. This creates a major public health problem, stemming not only from the user but also from the person who uses and dispenses the medication. Objective: To determine the characterization of medications and self-medication in users of drugstores in the El Agustino district from September 2018 to February 2019. Materials and Methods: This was an observational, descriptive, prospective, and cross-sectional study.
Irresponsible self-medication and self-prescription practices have increased among users of drugstores, becoming a public health problem. In Peru, regarding the use of health services, pharmacies and drugstores constitute the preferred places of care (MINSA 2013). The WHO advised that countries’ health policies should take responsible self-medication into account and seek ways to optimize its use with over-the-counter medicines under the supervision of a pharmacist. In our context, the practice of responsible self-medication is infrequent; however, its dissemination could reduce the overload in hospitals and health centers. For all the reasons stated, this research was considered important. It is concluded that 6.2% of drugstore users practice responsible self-medication, while 23.5% only self-medicate, and 70.3% self-prescribe. It is recommended to inform drugstore users, using simple language, about the existence of two groups of medicines established by law, and to provide education on when a condition should be considered minor and why. These tasks fall primarily on the expert in medicines, the pharmacist, since drugstores are the first places people go when they become ill.

The objective was to analyze the level of knowledge and attitudes toward self-medication with azithromycin among users visiting the Cruz de Chalpón Drugstore in Los Olivos in 2021. Methodology: The research used a non-experimental, cross-sectional, and descriptive design. The sample consisted of 385 users. A validated survey was applied, which included open-ended questions for the knowledge variable and a Likert-scale questionnaire for the attitude variable. Results: In general, participants showed a medium level of knowledge. Specifically, the knowledge level was medium for self-medication with azithromycin (42.6%), the consequences of self-medication with azithromycin (45.2%), bacterial resistance with azithromycin (42.3%), and knowledge level based on demographic data (50.0%). Furthermore, users' attitudes were unfavorable (80.3%). Conclusion: The research allowed for an analysis of users' knowledge and attitudes, which showed that they have a simultaneous medium level of knowledge and an unfavorable attitude toward self-medication with azithromycin.
