Effects on health from exposure to surgical smoke of operating room personnel
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2019-02-17) Castillo Baca, Fanny Mary; Aponte Jara, Yesenia Iris; Gamarra Bustillos, Carlos
Surgical smoke contains substances that are harmful to healthcare personnel, as 80% consists of water vapor and 20% includes substances such as formaldehyde (irritant and potential carcinogen), acetaldehyde (carcinogen), benzene (carcinogen), and toluene (respiratory and eye irritant as well as neurotoxic when inhaled). Additionally, hydrogen cyanide (3-51 parts per million), acetylene (2-8 parts per million), and 1,3-butadiene (0.15-0.69 parts per million) were identified in the plume. These chemical compounds can trigger harmful effects on the human body, including cancer and respiratory symptoms such as pharyngeal burning, nasal congestion, nausea, and headaches. Therefore, exposure to and inhalation of this smoke affects the health of operating room personnel, depending on the duration of exposure and the type of surgery performed, leading to long-term consequences.

Risk factors for gastric cancer in the adult population
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 1905-07-09) Callacna Silva, Miriam del Pilar; Deza Arana, María Sabina; Rivera Lozada de Bonilla, Oriana
Methodology: It is a systematic review of 10 articles, 30% from Colombia, 20% from Peru, Mexico and Ecuador respectively and 10% from Panama. The majority of articles are case-control studies with 70% and 30% cross-sectional studies. These articles were obtained from the Pubmed and scielo databases. Results: the 10 articles reviewed show that the risk factors for gastric cancer are: 40% salt, 30% alcohol consumption, 20% having a family history, not using adequate refrigeration to preserve food and low level of education, as well as foods exposed to smoke, cooking with firewood, consuming reheated foods, low consumption of fruits and vegetables and tobacco respectively. And 10% have inadequate eating habits, physical inactivity and a sedentary lifestyle, stress, pharmacological habits, as well as low socioeconomic level, being over 50 years old, having H. Pylori, consumption of red pork meat and sausages. 3 times a week and be female. Conclusion: High consumption of salt, as well as alcohol, constitutes 70% of the risk factors for gastric cancer.

Risks associated with inhalation of surgical smoke in healthcare personnel in the operating room.
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2017) Estrada Peralta, Giovanna Maribel; Gutierrez Ventura, Liliana; Remuzgo Artezano, Anika
Objectives: To analyze the risks associated with the inhalation of surgical smoke in operating room healthcare personnel. Methodology: A systematic review of 10 articles was conducted. We found that 30% (3) of the studies were from Mexico, 20% (2) from the United States, and 10% (1) from Turkey, Spain, Brazil, Australia, and Poland, respectively. The majority of studies were systematic reviews, making up 50%, primarily from the United States, Brazil, Spain, and Australia. A further 20% consisted of cross-sectional descriptive studies from Turkey and Mexico, while 10% were cohort, correlational, and cross-sectional studies from Mexico, Poland, and Mexico, respectively. Results: According to the results of the systematic review, 100% (n=10/10) of the articles reviewed show that surgical smoke poses potential health risks to the personnel working in the surgical center. Conclusions: The studies indicate that inhalation of surgical smoke represents a chemical and biological risk factor for personnel working in the operating room.
