Ítem Acceso abierto Effect of the extraoral suctor on the number and size of aerosol droplets generated by the high-speed turbine. In vitro study(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2021-12-09) Gonzales Condor, Leslie Kimberly; Arauzo Sinchez, Carlos JavierOne of the healthcare professions considered at high risk for COVID-19 transmission is dentistry, due to the use of high-speed turbines that generate aerosol particles with contaminating agents. In response to this critical situation during the pandemic, extraoral suction devices have been innovated to capture a higher volume of emitted fluids. Objective: To determine the effect of using the extraoral suction device on the quantity and size of aerosol droplets generated by the high-speed turbine. Methodology: This was an in vitro, experimental, comparative, and analytical study. The population and sample consisted of 20 acrylic tooth units. For each cavity preparation, 8 water-sensitive papers were used to record the droplets; 10 teeth used the extraoral suction device (experimental group) and 10 teeth used conventional suction (control group). A chamber opening was simulated in the teeth using a high-speed turbine, and the quantity and size of the aerosol droplets generated were recorded on water-sensitive papers (total of 160) at radii of 30 and 60 centimeters. The droplets recorded were scanned and analyzed using STAINMASTER software. The quantity and size of the particles were analyzed using Mann-Whitney and T-student tests for independent samples, respectively. Results: The use of the extraoral suction device, compared to conventional suction, reduced the quantity and size of the droplets from an average of 17.82 droplets/cm² and 128.15 µm to 0.64 droplets/cm² and 85.18 µm, respectively, showing a percentage reduction of 96.4% in quantity and 33.53% in size. Conclusion: The use of the extraoral suction device had positive effects on the quantity and size of aerosol droplets generated by the high-speed turbine.
