Ítem Acceso abierto Cell phones as sources of pathogens and their risk in hospital-acquired infections in the intensive care unit“ “Cell phones as sources of pathogens and their risk in hospital-acquired infections in the intensive care unit(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-01-09) Gonzalez Janampa, Marizol Modesta; Vélez Lamela, Rosario del Pilar; Avila Vargas Machuca, Jeannette GiselleCell phones are frequently used by healthcare workers during working hours and are not properly disinfected. Cell phones are susceptible to contamination by bacterial pathogens and could be involved in nosocomial transmission. Cell phones are perfect for functioning as reservoirs of nosocomial pathogens due to their wide use in healthcare units and the lack of disinfection care. This is why we conducted this research to determine whether cell phones constitute a reservoir of nosocomial pathogens and could potentially constitute a fomite for these pathogens in a hospital environment. Bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli have been reported to remain viable for long periods and are an important source of infection. One of the measures to avoid hospital infections is also to strictly apply the usual measures such as hand washing and asepsis when handling cell phones, since the frequency of disinfection of cell phones is scarce since most people do not disinfect their cell phones.
