Ítem Acceso abierto Effectiveness of bee honey in the treatment of acute cough to decrease its severity, frequency and improve the quality of sleep in children from 1 to 5 years old(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2019-11-17) Pichilingue Estupiñan, Jackeline Andrea; Chaname Trelles, Melina Haira; Cárdenas de Fernández, María HildaObjective: Systematize the evidence on the effectiveness of honey in the treatment of acute cough to reduce severity, frequency, and improve sleep quality in children aged 1 to 5 years. Material and Method: Observational and retrospective systematic review, the search was restricted to 10 full-text articles. The reviews of the articles were obtained from the following databases: Pubmed, Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, Dialnet, Scielo, and Lilacs. They were analyzed using the Grade scale to determine the strength and quality of the evidence. Of the 10 articles, 70% (7/10) were randomized clinical trials (RCTs), 10% (1/10) were systematic reviews, 10% (1/10) were experimental studies, and 10% (1/10) were cross-sectional studies. The articles came from Canada 20% (2/10), Saudi Arabia 10% (1/10), Iran 10% (1/10), Nigeria 10% (1/10), Malaysia 10% (1/10), Italy 10% (1/10), Chile 10% (1/10), Egypt 10% (1/10), and Brazil 10% (1/10). Results: Of the 10 articles reviewed, 100% (10/10) showed that honey is effective in the treatment of acute cough to reduce severity, frequency, and improve sleep quality in children aged 1 to 5 years. Conclusions: The articles, 100%, show that honey is effective in the treatment of acute cough to reduce severity, frequency, and improve sleep quality in children aged 1 to 5 years, by boosting the immune system, with antimicrobial, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects.
