Effectiveness of graduated compression stockings for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis in surgical patients
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2017-12-03) Jimenez Yamunaque, Marilyn Zanella; Pérez Lupo, Nataly Flor; Rivera Lozada de Bonilla, Oriana
Objective: To systematize the evidence on the effectiveness of graduated compression stockings for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis in surgical patients. Materials and Methods: A systematic review of 10 scientific articles on the effectiveness of graduated compression stockings for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis in surgical patients was conducted. These articles were found in the following databases: BMJ Open, Wiley One Library, Science Direct, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Journal of Critical Care, and Research Gate. According to the results obtained from the systematic review conducted in this study, 10 articles were reviewed systematically, with 10% (1) being meta-analyses and systematic reviews, 40% (4) being systematic reviews, 30% (3) being experimental studies, and 20% (2) being cohort studies. Results: 60% (n=6) of the evidence found indicates a mostly positive effect on the effectiveness of graduated compression stockings for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis in surgical patients. 40% (n=4) of the evidence found indicates a negative effect on the effectiveness of graduated compression stockings for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis in surgical patients. Conclusion: The positive effect on the effectiveness of graduated compression stockings in preventing deep vein thrombosis in surgical patients is considered to be of greater relevance.
