Ítem Acceso abierto Efficacy of the use of vancomycin powder for the prevention of surgical site infection in patients undergoing spinal surgery.(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2018-01-27) Poccorpachi Salazar, Ynfa; Pretell Aguilar, Rosa MariaObjective: To analyze and systematize evidence demonstrating the efficacy of powdered vancomycin for preventing surgical site infections in patients undergoing spinal surgery. Materials and Methods: Systematic review and retrospective cohort study. The search was restricted to 10 full-text articles, which were critically reviewed using the GRADE system to assess their strength and quality of evidence. Results: Of the selected 10 articles, 70% (7/10) were systematic reviews, and 30% (3/10) were retrospective cohort studies. All (100%) were scientific articles, predominantly international in nature. Additionally, 60% (6/10) originated from the United States, 30% (3/10) from Spain, and 10% (1/10) from Germany. Eighty percent (8/10) of the authors indicated that powdered vancomycin is effective in preventing surgical site infections. However, 20% (2/10) noted that the certainty of evidence for the use of powdered vancomycin at the surgical site is very low and limited. They suggested that its application in spinal surgery should be approached with caution. Conclusions: The use of powdered vancomycin is effective in preventing surgical site infections in patients undergoing spinal surgery.
