Academic stress and coping strategies in nursing students at Norbert Wiener University, November 2010
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2011) Montoya Revilla, Liliana; Villarreal Sulca, Rosa Margarita; Chávez Flores, Erik Mario
Academic stress and the lack of adequate coping mechanisms are two of the most common issues among students due to the consequences they generate at an academic level. Nursing students must properly manage coping mechanisms in response to academic stress. For this reason, the following research problem was proposed: What are the levels of academic stress and what coping strategies are used by students in the V and VI cycles of Nursing at Wiener University? The objective was to evaluate the level of academic stress and the coping strategies of students according to academic cycle, gender, marital status, employment condition, and weighted average, as well as the relationship between the study variables. This analysis is correlational and cross-sectional. Population: students enrolled in the professional courses of the Academic Professional Nursing School (third to tenth cycle) in the 2010-II academic semester. Sample: 50 students from the courses Adult Health Nursing II (V cycle) and Women's and Neonatal Health Nursing (VI cycle), enrolled in the morning shift. The instrument used was the Barraza scale, adapted by the authors, which was subjected to reliability testing with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.79. The results showed that students in the V and VI cycles exhibit medium levels of stress, with task overload and evaluations being the main stressors, while students in the VI cycle use more appropriate coping strategies (assertive skills). No significant correlation was found between stress level and coping strategies.

Adherence to the handwashing protocol in the Operating Room before and after the surgical procedure is of utmost importance and must be done correctly. This led to the investigation of the following question: What is the level of adherence to the institutional handwashing protocol among healthcare personnel in the Operating Room of a private clinic in Breña (Lima-Peru)? The study was quantitative, descriptive-explanatory, and prospective. The study population consisted of 100 healthcare professionals (Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, Nurses, and Nursing Technicians). The data collection technique used was Participant Observation, with three observations made for each sample element. The instrument used was a Checklist validated by Expert Judges, and reliability was assessed using the Test-Retest method (0.836 Before and 0.909 After the surgical intervention). The overall results show that 83% of the staff demonstrate medium and high adherence to the handwashing protocol before the surgical procedure (71% and 12%, respectively), and 70% show medium and high adherence after the surgical procedure (45% and 25%, respectively). The analysis of the results by strata predominantly shows medium adherence among surgeons, nurses, and nursing technicians, while anesthesiologists show an even distribution of low and medium adherence levels before and after the surgical procedure.

Knowledge and attitudes about abortion in women of reproductive age, National Teaching Hospital Mother-Child San Bartolomé.
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2013) Coronel Guevara, Isabel; Chávez Flores, Erik Mario
This study addresses the issue of abortion in Peru, considered a criminal act and a public health problem due to the undesirable physical and/or psychological consequences it generates for the mother-child duo, in addition to its recognized social impact. Therefore, it was deemed important to determine the relationship between knowledge and attitudes regarding abortion in women of childbearing age. The study is quantitative, relational, and cross-sectional in design. The sample consisted of 113 women who attended the National Hospital San Bartolomé between August and November 2012. A validated questionnaire was used to assess knowledge through expert judgment and point-biserial coefficient. To determine reliability, the Kuder-Richardson test was applied. Attitudes were measured using a Likert-type scale, whose validity and reliability were determined through expert judgment, Pearson correlation coefficient, and Cronbach's alpha. The results show that there is a high percentage of women with "regular knowledge" about abortion (49.6%) and mostly indifferent attitudes (45%). When relating both variables, the study shows that there is a significant relationship between them. Women with "insufficient knowledge" predominantly show acceptance of abortion (46.4%); women with "regular knowledge" show indifferent attitudes (41.1%); and women with "good knowledge" show indifferent attitudes (58.6%) with a tendency to reject abortion (34.5%). It is concluded that the greater the knowledge, the greater the rejection of abortion; and the less the knowledge, the greater the acceptance of abortion.

Occupational stress and coping strategies of nurses in the medicine service (third floor) at Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen Hospital
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2015) Castilla Aburto, Justina Victoria; Remigio Silva, Edwin David; Chávez Flores, Erik Mario
The origin of this work is to understand the level of work-related stress in nurses in the Medicine service, a service in which they are constantly exposed to strong emotions, tensions, and risks due to the nature of the patients who come to this service. If we add inadequate working conditions to this, these factors collectively generate "work-related stress," which affects their productivity, leading to poor quality nursing care. The objective of the study is to determine the level of work-related stress and the coping strategies of nurses in the Medicine service (third floor) at the Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen National Hospital. The study is quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional, and non-experimental in design. The sample consists of 41 nurses from the Medicine service at the Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen Hospital. The instruments used were a Likert-type scale to measure stress and a coping strategies inventory developed by the author Nancy Rondoy, which were subjected to reliability testing. For the Likert-type scale, the Cronbach's Alpha coefficient was used, with a result of Alpha = 0.99, indicating reliability. For validity, Pearson’s correlation coefficient was applied, resulting in a correlation coefficient of R > 0.20, which indicates validity. Similarly, the Coping Strategies Inventory was validated through expert judgment (9 judges), which allowed adjustments to be made according to their suggestions, with a result of p < 0.05, indicating significance. The results were as follows: The majority of nurses (53.7%) presented a medium level of work-related stress. When analyzing the results by dimension, a medium level of work-related stress was also found in the physical, psychological, and social dimensions (61%, 61%, and 53.7%, respectively). 56% of the nurses in the Medicine service (third floor) at the Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen Hospital had a moderately adequate level of coping strategies. Of these, 56% of the nurses had a moderately adequate level of physiological coping strategies, 48% had an adequate level of cognitive coping strategies, and 43% had a moderately adequate level of behavioral coping strategies.

Perception of body image and risk of eating disorders in adolescent girls aged 13 to 18 at Colegio Nacional República de Chile - Lince, 2014
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2015) Ilave Aguirre, Dora Ada; Pizango Campos, Verith; Chávez Flores, Erik Mario
Media often disseminate idealized messages about beauty and how to achieve it, negatively influencing adolescents who follow and seek a perfect image, thereby distorting their self-image and causing them to engage in unhealthy diets to reach this ideal, which can lead to Eating Disorders (EDs), constituting public health problems. For these reasons, this study aims to determine the relationship between body image perception and the risk of EDs in adolescents. The data collection was conducted using the standardized scales EEICA and EAT-26. The study population consists of 297 adolescents aged 13 to 18 from the República de Chile Educational Center, and the sample comprised 109 students. The results show that 26.6% of adolescents are dissatisfied with their body image, and 26% are at risk of EDs (8% at low risk, 12% at medium risk, and 6% at high risk). The hypothesis of an indirect relationship between body image perception and the risk of EDs was confirmed (p-value 0.000). Adolescents in the third grade have a better perception of their body image (p-value: 0.004), and adolescents in the fifth grade show a higher risk of EDs (p-value: 0.004). No statistically significant differences were found between body image perception and the risk of EDs according to age group.
