The objective of this study was to determine the quality of life related to oral health, according to the perceptions of adolescents aged 11-14 and their parents, at the educational institution 0146 Su Santidad Juan Pablo II in the district of San Juan de Lurigancho in 2017. This study was descriptive, prospective, and cross-sectional. The probabilistic sample consisted of 170 adolescents aged 11-14 years with their respective parents. The instruments used were the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ 11-14) and the Parental-Caregiver Perceptions Questionnaire (P-CPQ), which were completed by the adolescents and parents. The dental caries experience was assessed through the DMFT index, and the molar relationship was also recorded. Statistical analysis was performed using Poisson regression with a robust estimator. Results: The quality of life related to oral health, according to the perceptions of the adolescents aged 11-14 years and their parents, was not statistically significant when related to age, gender, caries experience, and molar relationship. In the studied sample, the average DMFT score was 4.62 teeth with dental caries experience. The majority of adolescents rated their oral health as "good" (42.9%), while their parents rated it as "fair" (54.7%). Regarding how oral health affects their general well-being, adolescents considered it to affect them "a little" (49.4%), similar to the parents' perception (35.9%). According to the Pearson correlation analysis, there was a statistically significant correlation (40.3%) between the adolescents' quality of life related to oral health and their parents' perception of it.

Objective: To determine the antimicrobial action of the triple antibiotic paste (TAP) and its modification with clindamycin at concentrations of 2 µg/ml, 1 µg/ml, 0.5 µg/ml, 0.25 µg/ml, 0.125 µg/ml against Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 strain. Materials and methods: The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of the drugs comprising TAP (minocycline, metronidazole, and ciprofloxacin) and MTAP (clindamycin, metronidazole, and ciprofloxacin) were determined using the broth dilution method on E. faecalis strains at concentrations of 2 µg/ml, 1 µg/ml, 0.5 µg/ml, 0.25 µg/ml, and 0.125 µg/ml for each group. Results: Significant turbidity changes were observed for TAP at 2 µg/ml and 1 µg/ml, with the latter being the MIC. No bactericidal effects were observed at both concentrations. On the other hand, the MTAP group showed significant turbidity changes at all concentrations, except for the control group, with the MIC being 0.125 µg/ml and the MBC 0.5 µg/ml, respectively. Conclusions: Both combinations exhibited antimicrobial activity; however, MTAP demonstrated a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.125 µg/ml and bactericidal concentration of 0.5 µg/ml, effectively inhibiting the growth of Enterococcus faecalis at low concentrations.

The objective of this study was to compare the frequency of pharmacological self-medication versus non-pharmacological self-medication for managing dental pain in patients attending the Primary Care Center III “Independencia”- Essalud in August 2017. The methodology used was observational, retrospective, cross-sectional, and explanatory. The study sample consisted of 400 patients with a history of dental pain. The instrument used was a survey that recorded control variables (sex, age, place of origin, educational level, source of information) and the main variable (Self-medication). The results showed that 83% of the 400 patients interviewed self-medicated, of which 72.6% opted for pharmacological self-medication and 24.1% for non-pharmacological self-medication. In conclusion, the frequency of pharmacological self-medication is higher than non-pharmacological self-medication for managing dental pain in patients attending the Primary Care Center III “Independencia”- Essalud during August 2017 in the Independencia district. Based on these findings, it is suggested to implement specific educational talks on self-medication, prioritizing its complications.

Traditionally, the oral health status of a population is assessed through clinical indicators; however, it is important to evaluate the impact of this condition on the overall well-being of children. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of oral problems (dental caries and malocclusions) on oral health-related quality of life in children aged 8 to 10 years attending I.E. 32385 Virgen De Fátima in the Llata District, Huánuco, in 2016. The study was observational, prospective, cross-sectional, and analytical. The sample was convenience-based, consisting of 110 schoolchildren. The results showed that the majority of the children were 9 years old (49.1%). More than half of the children perceived that their oral health was “Very good or Good,” reflecting a positive perception. It was concluded that, according to the CPO, the average score was (10.34 ± 3.13), indicating a very high experience of dental caries, while the frequency of malocclusion types was 81.5% for Type I, 8.3% for Type II, and 10.2% for Type III. Additionally, more than half (55.5%) had a positive perception of their oral health, while about a third (74.5%) perceived that their oral health affected their quality of life. Final analyses showed that having 0 to 5 teeth with experience of dental caries significantly impacts the oral symptomatology dimension within the CPQ8-10. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that 8-year-old children have a significant risk of impact on oral symptomatology and social well-being, as well as on the overall component of oral health-related quality of life.

Materials and Methods: Ten toothpaste brands available in the local market were used, with pediatric toothpastes recommended by specialists in pediatric dentistry. Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 25175) was cultured on a specific medium (tryptic soy agar, yeast extract, sucrose, and bacitracin), which is ideal for the recovery and evaluation of Streptococcus mutans, as referenced in studies certifying its suitability. Bacitracin was used to allow only the growth of this bacterium, preventing contamination in our cultures. The agar diffusion method was used, where the agar is inoculated with the bacterial strain to ensure uniform growth. A modification was made to the preparation of the agar, adding 50 ml of sterile lamb blood to create contrast between the agar and inhibition halos. The cylinder-plate technique from the United States Pharmacopeia was employed, which involves using calibrated cylinders (made of surgical steel or porcelain) measuring 10 mm in height and having an external diameter of 8 mm and an internal diameter of 6 mm. These cylinders were placed on the plates with a spacing of 6 cylinders per plate, following the plate's perimeter and ensuring distance between them for the formation of inhibition halos. According to the technique's protocol, 6 Petri dishes were used for each toothpaste evaluated, 6 plates for evaluating the Gold Standard (penicillin plus gentamicin), and another 6 Petri dishes for the negative evaluation. Conclusions: The toothpaste brands sold in the local market showed inhibitory activity against Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 25175), except for one.

The aim of this study is to determine the inhibitory effect of the essential oils of Origanum vulgare and Mentha piperita in comparison to nystatin against Candida albicans strains. Eighty Petri dishes were prepared with Sabouraud agar and inoculated with Candida albicans strains. The dishes were divided into two parts: 40 dishes for Origanum vulgare and 40 for Mentha piperita. Four wells were created with concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%, one negative control well with distilled water, and one positive control well with Nystatin for each plate, making a total of six wells per Petri dish. The plates were incubated at 37°C, and the inhibition halos were measured at 24 and 48 hours. The data were processed using the statistical test for comparison of means for independent samples. The results concluded that Origanum vulgare exhibited an inhibition halo of 45.73mm and 46.35mm at 24 and 48 hours, respectively, greater than Nystatin, which showed 17.83mm and 18.20mm, and Mentha piperita, which exhibited 18.85mm and 19.88mm, very close to Nystatin, with 19.60mm and 20.30mm.

The objective of this study was to determine the inhibitory effect of Vaccinium corymbosum (Blueberry) at 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, and 0.12% Chlorhexidine Gluconate against the presence of Streptococcus mutans in an in vitro study in Lima, 2015, at 24 and 48 hours. To this end, Streptococcus mutans strains were isolated from saliva collected from a patient and cultured on Petri dishes containing Blood Agar medium, with 6 mm diameter wells where approximately 100 µl of the 100%, 75%, 50%, 25% extracts, 0.12% Chlorhexidine Gluconate, and distilled water were poured. The plates were incubated at 37°C, including two control plates to check the viability of the bacteria and the sterility of the medium. After incubation, the inhibition halos were measured with a Vernier caliper or ruler at 24 and 48 hours. For data analysis, ANOVA and Dunnett tests were used, showing that 0.12% Chlorhexidine Gluconate had a significantly higher inhibitory effect than the 100% Vaccinium Corymbosum extract (P<0.05), and the 75% and 50% Vaccinium Corymbosum extracts (P<0.05). It was concluded that the inhibitory effect of 100% Vaccinium Corymbosum is lower than that of 75% Vaccinium Corymbosum and very similar to 0.12% Chlorhexidine Gluconate in the bacterial culture of Streptococcus mutans at 24 and 72 hours.
