Ítem Acceso abierto Effectiveness of vitamin d supplementation in patients with covid 19(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-05-16) Sanchez Gaspar, Marco Antonio; Bohórquez Medina, Andrea LisbetNutritional intervention, specifically vitamin D supplementation in the intensive care unit, helps prevent complications associated with critically ill COVID-19 patients, according to clinical studies. This secondary study, titled "Effectiveness of Vitamin D Supplementation in Critically Ill COVID-19 Patients," was classified as a critical review based on its methodological structure. Its purpose was to analyze the effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation concerning primary outcomes (mortality) and secondary outcomes (morbidity, infection, inflammatory status, days on mechanical ventilation, nutritional support, polypharmacy, hospital stay, and hospital costs). The clinical question was: What is the effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation in critically ill patients with COVID-19 regarding the reduction of mortality, morbidity, infection, inflammatory status, days on mechanical ventilation, nutritional support, polypharmacy, hospital stay, and hospital costs? For the methodological development, evidence-based nutrition (EBN) guidelines were followed. Subsequently, to carry out the bibliographic search, the following scientific databases were used: PubMed, Science Direct, and Clinical Trials; a total of 22 clinical studies were selected, with 10 articles meeting the eligibility criteria, which were critically evaluated by the researcher using the CASPE tool. Finally, the RCT “Vitamin D Supplements, COVID-19, and Disease Severity: A Meta-analysis” was selected, which has a level 2 evidence and a strong recommendation grade, according to the researcher’s criteria. The critical review concluded that vitamin D supplementation is effective in reducing days on mechanical ventilation and hospital stay in critically ill COVID-19 patients.
