Ítem Acceso abierto Educational strategy of tooth brushing, with and without toothpaste, at the level of oral hygiene of primary school children in an educational center in Lima, 2018.(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2021-10-06) Herrera Cunyas, Rosa Reyna; Vilchez Bellido, DinaThe objective of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of a dental brushing educational strategy, with and without toothpaste, on the oral hygiene level of 3rd and 4th-grade primary school students from the Centro Educativo Divino Niño Jesús in Cercado de Lima, 2018. This quasi-experimental study involved a sample of 90 students from 3rd and 4th grade, who were measured for their oral hygiene level using the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index of Greene and Vermillion (IHOS), before and after an educational dental brushing strategy, with and without toothpaste, after assent and informed consent were obtained from their parents. The results showed the effectiveness of dental brushing in improving the students' oral hygiene level, with the average IHOS score decreasing from 1.51 to 0.27 with toothpaste brushing and from 1.69 to 0.38 with brushing without toothpaste. Additionally, the oral hygiene level of 3rd-grade students improved from 11.1% with good oral hygiene before brushing to 80% after brushing with toothpaste. In 4th grade, the percentage increased from only 2.2% with good oral hygiene to 71.1% after brushing without toothpaste. Statistically significant differences were found (P < 0.05) between the oral hygiene level before and after brushing with and without toothpaste. Conclusion: The dental brushing educational strategy was effective, showing a better oral hygiene level in students when using toothpaste.
