Therefore, this study was conducted to determine potential drug interactions in the prescriptions of patients hospitalized in the Pediatric Surgery Department of the San Bartolomé National Teaching Hospital. A retrospective, non-experimental, cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted. To this end, information was collected through medical prescriptions for 222 patients. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. A total of 168 patients with potential drug interactions were identified. A total of 1,621 interactions were found; therefore, 46.4% were male and 29.3% were female. The highest prevalence age group, 27.5%, was 0–3 years. The most common drugs with interactions are metamizole + ketorolac (18.1%), ranitidine + ketorolac (15.9%), and others (26.3%). Furthermore, the highest prevalence by onset is nonspecific (95.9%). The highest prevalence by severity is moderate (44.2%). The mechanism of action is pharmacokinetic (57.9%), with the majority being synergistic (36.7%) and metabolic (30.3%). All of this is analyzed using databases and bibliographic references such as Micromedex, Drugs.Com, and Medscape. In conclusion, the results indicate that patients in the pediatric surgery department are at risk for PMI.
