The objectives were to determine the hypoglycemic activity and evaluate the capacity of the ethanolic extract from the seed of Persea americana Mill, 'Palto' (avocado), to reduce histological damage in pancreatic β cells. Methodology: The ethanolic extract was obtained by collecting, chopping, and drying the seed. Maceration was performed for 7 days. The Szkudelski method was used, which induces diabetes with alloxan, and the hypoglycemic evaluation was performed using test strips. After the study concluded, the animals were sacrificed, and histological sections of the pancreas were prepared. Results: The seed extract showed solubility in water. Treatment with the 200 mg/kg dose was the most effective in reducing glucose. The histological sections showed that the damage produced by alloxan was minor in the pancreatic β cells of the mice treated with the extract of the species under study. Conclusion: The ethanolic extract of the seed was successfully obtained and the solubility test was performed. The extract applied in mice presents hypoglycemic activity via the Szkudelski method, and it was determined that the seed extract has the capacity to reduce histological damage in pancreatic β cells.

(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2015) Bello Sánchez, Vanessa Jaqueline; Inche Cabello, Jorge Alberto; Torres Veliz, Ernesto Raúl
The hypoglycemic effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of Smallanthus sonchifolius (Poepp.) H. Rob. (“yacón”) leaves and of a commercially available extract was evaluated on blood glucose levels in male and female mice, both normoglycemic and with hyperglycemia induced by oral glucose overload and alloxan, in order to assess their possible hypoglycemic activity. Blood glucose measurements were taken after fasting at 0, 2, 4, 6, and 24 hours. The analysis of results showed that administration of the hydroalcoholic extract of Smallanthus sonchifolius leaves and of the commercial extract in normoglycemic mice did not produce a statistically significant decrease (p > 0.05) in blood glucose levels; only glibenclamide exhibited this effect at 24 hours. In hyperglycemic mice with oral glucose overload, a statistically significant decrease (p < 0.05) in blood glucose levels was observed with administration of both extracts at 6 hours after the initial measurement. Similarly, in alloxan-induced hyperglycemic mice, a statistically significant decrease (p < 0.05) in blood glucose levels was observed 6 hours after treatment. It is concluded that the extract of Smallanthus sonchifolius leaves and the commercial preparation exhibit hypoglycemic activity under induced hyperglycemia, but do not present hypoglycemic effects under normoglycemic conditions.

A study was conducted on the efficacy of caigua (Cyclanthera pedata) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, with the aim of reducing hyperglycemia levels. The participants were residents of the former Santa Rosa estate (in the district of Lurín) who presented with this disease. This population, due to its engagement in pig farming and the sale of high-fat products, is at high risk of developing other chronic diseases (cardiovascular risk, retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy, etc.). The study included 350 people. Treatment was administered to 37 of them, duly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus by medical staff. Biochemical determination of glycemia was performed using the enzymatic method, and the Student’s t-test and the Kolmogorov test were applied as statistical methods. For the treatment with caigua, a dose of 20 g in the form of salad was administered once a week for a period of 3 months. At the end of this period, it was observed that the 37 patients included in the study showed a decrease in glucose levels. Laboratory determinations before and after were 142.78 mg/dL and 85.15 mg/dL, respectively. As a control group, 5 patients who abandoned the treatment due to work and other activities were considered. Their glucose levels were measured before and after, showing no decrease when compared to those who adhered to the caigua treatment.

(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-08-17) Cano Agramonte, Kenyi Ricardo; Chávez Flores, Juana Elvira
The objective was to evaluate the hypoglycemic effect of the ethanolic extract from the leaves of Vallesia dichotoma Ruiz & Pav., 'cun cun,' in mice. Methodology: The plant was collected in the La Primavera human settlement, Piura. A solubility test and a qualitative analysis were performed on the 'cun cun' leaves. A total of 48 mice of the Balbin/C53/CNPB strain were used, with an average body weight between 30–40 g. They were assigned to six groups of eight individuals. The first group was the control, the second was a Glibenclamide standard (5 mg/kg), and the third, fourth, and fifth groups were extracts at concentrations of 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg, all administered orally. Diabetes was induced with Alloxan at 75 mg/kg via intraperitoneal injection. Results: The ethanolic extract was found to be soluble in polar solvents (distilled water, ethanol, and methanol) and to contain flavonoids, phenolic compounds, steroids and/or triterpenes, and alkaloids. The extract at concentrations of 100 and 150 mg/kg had a hypoglycemic effect (p-value < 0.05). Conclusion: The hypoglycemic effect of the ethanolic extract from the leaves of Vallesia dichotoma Ruiz & Pav., 'cun cun,' was confirmed at the 100 mg/kg concentration.

Rambutan is an exotic fruit from Malaysia that is cultivated in the central Peruvian jungle. Metabolites with hypoglycemic activity have been found in its seed and peel. Objective: This study aimed to determine the level of knowledge of the hypoglycemic action of rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum L.) and its use as a complementary therapy for type 2 diabetes among patients of the Capricornio drugstore in the San Martín de Porres district, Lima, in 2022. Methodology: The design was non-experimental, descriptive, cross-sectional, and correlational in scope. A validated data collection instrument was used on a sample of 220 patients who visited the Capricornio drugstore. Results: Positive results were obtained for the four specific hypotheses proposed, so the alternative hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected. Conclusions: The evaluation of patients at the Capricornio drugstore concluded that as knowledge of rambutan's hypoglycemic action increases, the use of complementary therapy also increases, thus confirming the general hypothesis of the study.

(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2019-01-31) Chávez Taype, Katherine; Buitron Arenaza, Rossillo Vanessa; Caldas Herrera, Emma
The objective of this study was to identify drug-related problems (DRPs) associated with new molecules in outpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, according to the classification of the Second Granada Consensus, at Clínica Internacional between January 2015 and March 2017. A descriptive, retrospective, and longitudinal study was conducted, with a population of 359 patients and a sample of 172 patients over 35 years of age. Clinical records were reviewed, with emphasis on those receiving treatment with new molecules (Kombiglyze, Onglyza, Trayenta, Toujeo, Jardiance, Victoza, Forxiga, Tresiba), prescribed by the Endocrinology Department. A DRP Identification Form was used to achieve the study objectives. Through pharmacotherapeutic follow-up, a total of 441 DRPs were identified, of which 58.7% (259) corresponded to male patients and 41.3% (182) to female patients. Potential DRPs accounted for 68.9% (304) and actual DRPs for 31.1% (137). Regarding the subtypes of DRPs, those related to necessity (DRP1) represented 15% (66), those related to effectiveness (DRP3) accounted for 5% (22), those related to safety (DRP5) represented 78% (346), and DRP6 accounted for 2% (7).
