Critical review: effect of lycopene supplementation on inflammatory markers in patients with prostate cancer
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2022-02-11) Allcca Alfaro, Beltrán; Bohórquez Medina, Andrea Lisbet
Prostate cancer is a condition that affects men, with high mortality rates worldwide. Lycopene consumption, a carotenoid, could be beneficial in preventing cellular damage and, therefore, reducing the risk of prostate cancer. The purpose of this secondary study was to critically analyze the impact of lycopene supplementation on inflammatory markers (PCR, IL) in prostate cancer patients, to determine its effect on reducing mortality. The Evidence-Based Nutrition (NuBE) methodology was used. After researching in PUBMED, SCIENCE DIRECT, and COCHRANE, 49 articles were found, of which 10 were reviewed using the critical reading tool Caspe, resulting in the selection of a multiethnic cohort article. It was concluded that lycopene consumption is related to the reduction of inflammatory factors and, therefore, mortality, which can be achieved through the intake of lycopene supplements or foods that contain it. Further research on lycopene and its anti-inflammatory effects on biomarkers is needed.

(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2020-12-10) Oscátegui Pérez, Raúl Gustavo; Bohórquez Medina, Sofia Lorena
The critical review presented below is titled: “Nutritional supplementation with Selenium and/or Vitamin E in the functional improvement of patients with Prostate Cancer”, which aimed to identify whether nutritional supplements such as selenium and/or vitamin E decrease the risk of prostate cancer in people over 45 years of age. The clinical question was: Can nutritional supplementation with Selenium and/or vitamin E produce any functional improvement in the patient with prostate cancer? The Evidence-Based Nutrition (NuBE) methodology was used. The information search was carried out in PUBMED/ MEDLINE, SCIELO, SCOPUS, SCIENCE DIRECT and WOS, 50 articles were found, 09 were selected that have been evaluated by the CASPE critical reading tool, finally selecting the systematic review and meta-analysis entitled: “ The association between Selenium and Prostate Cancer: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis”, which has a level of evidence A I and a high Grade of Recommendation. The critical commentary allowed us to conclude that selenium most likely has a protective role in the development of prostate cancer and its progression in advanced stages, which is why the administration of selenium supplements can be proposed for the prevention of prostate cancer. Unlike what was found with vitamin E supplementation, in which high doses could be associated with a greater risk of general mortality, taking into account that the daily amount can be easily obtained through diet.

Relationship between specific prostate antigen and the beta subunit of the human chorionic gonadotropin hormone in men with diagnosis of prostate cancer in a public institution in Lima, 2023
(Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener, 2024-04-28) Calderón Borda, Deisy Estefany; Borja Velezmoro, Gustavo Adolfo
Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in Peru, and in most cases, early detection tests are feasible. However, in some areas, there is a lack of necessary resources to measure prostate-specific antigen levels in the population. The objective is to establish the relationship between prostate-specific antigen concentrations and the beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin in men aged 50 to 60 with a prostate cancer diagnosis in a public institution in Lima, 2023. Methodology: A non-experimental design was used with a quantitative approach and simple random sampling of 212 patient records. The technique of document analysis was employed, along with a data collection form and statistical analysis using IBM-SPSS. Results: 17.9% showed PSA levels in the high-risk category for prostate cancer, and 6.6% had intermediate-risk values. Additionally, 24.5% had pathological β-hCG levels. In the correlation analysis, a Spearman's Rho coefficient of 0.638 (p = 0.000) was obtained. Conclusion: A strong direct relationship exists between prostate-specific antigen levels and the beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin in men aged 50 to 60 with prostate cancer.
