Localización anatómica del foramen mentoniano en relación con la cresta alveolar y la base mandibular mediante tomografía computarizada Cone Beam en pacientes de un centro radiológico, Lima – 2024

Abstract

Este estudio tuvo como objetivo general determinar la localización anatómica del foramen mentoniano en relación con la cresta alveolar y la base mandibular, evaluada mediante Tomografía Computarizada Cone Beam (CBCT) en pacientes del Centro Radiológico Continental Orthodontics en Lima durante el año 2024. La población estuvo conformada por 200 tomografías CBCT de pacientes dentados, hombres y mujeres, con edades comprendidas entre 18 y 50 años. De esta población, se calculó una muestra representativa de 132 tomografías mediante muestreo probabilístico. El diseño metodológico del estudio fue observacional, retrospectivo y transversal. Se utilizó un enfoque cuantitativo que permitió recolectar y analizar datos numéricos mediante herramientas estadísticas descriptivas. Los resultados principales evidenciaron que la distancia promedio entre el foramen mentoniano y la cresta alveolar fue mayor en el lado derecho (14.14 mm) que en el izquierdo (13.69 mm). En cuanto a la base mandibular, la distancia promedio fue también superior en el lado derecho (12.49 mm) frente al izquierdo (11.91 mm). Además, las distancias fueron mayores en hombres y en pacientes de 18 a 29 años, evidenciando diferencias significativas por grupo etario y sexo. En conclusión, este estudio evidenció variaciones anatómicas del foramen mentoniano según el lado mandibular, el grupo etario y el sexo. Estas diferencias destacan la importancia de realizar evaluaciones detalladas mediante CBCT, garantizando precisión y seguridad en procedimientos odontológicos y quirúrgicos.

This study aimed to determine the anatomical location of the mental foramen in relation to the alveolar crest and the mandibular base, assessed using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) in patients from the Continental Orthodontics Radiological Center in Lima during 2024. The population consisted of 200 CBCT scans from dentate patients, both male and female, aged between 18 and 50 years. From this population, a representative sample of 132 scans was calculated using probabilistic sampling. The methodological design of the study was observational, retrospective, and cross-sectional. A quantitative approach was employed, which facilitated the collection and analysis of numerical data through descriptive statistical tools. The main results showed that the average distance between the mental foramen and the alveolar crest was greater on the right side (14.14 mm) than on the left side (13.69 mm). Regarding the mandibular base, the average distance was also greater on the right side (12.49 mm) compared to the left side (11.91 mm). Additionally, the distances were larger in males and in patients aged 18 to 29 years, with significant differences observed across age groups and sexes. In conclusion, this study highlighted anatomical variations of the mental foramen depending on the mandibular side, age group, and sex. These differences underscore the importance of performing detailed evaluations using CBCT to ensure precision and safety in dental and surgical procedures.
