| es_ES |
| dc.description.abstract | Introduction: Healthcare systems underwent a transformation during the COVID-19 pandemic, causing changes that will impact the surveillance of bacterial and fungal infections worldwide. In this regard, many species may have undergone a change in their epidemiology. Our objective was to determine the annual variations and resistance profile of fungal strains that were studied from clinical samples collected prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and during its duration the EsSalud Hospital Abancay-Apurímac, between 2018 and 2023. Methodology: This was a retrospective observational study in which 4,610 clinical samples referred for fungal culture by the Microbiology Service were analyzed. Results included patients of both sexes, with superficial and/or systemic infections, and with records in the hospital’s reporting system. Data were obtained from physical and digital records (ICD-10), standardized in Excel, and analyzed using SPSS v24. Results: Out of the total samples, 226 (4.9%) tested positive. The positivity rate before the pandemic (2018–2019) was 13.3% (43/303), decreasing to 1.3–1.8% in 2020–2021. In the post-pandemic period (2022–2023), the rate increased significantly (20.4–47.8%), showing a marked variation across study periods (p = 0.011). During 2018–2019, Trichophyton mentagrophytes (21.4%) and Trichophyton tonsurans (30.4%) were the most frequent. In 2020–2021, Candida sp. predominated (33.3 100%). In 2022–2023, Trichophyton tonsurans (26.1–39.8%) and nonspecific reports of “hyphae and yeasts” (29.6%) were the most common. No antifungal resistance data were recorded. Conclusions: Annual variations were observed in fungal isolates, which became evident when comparing the isolates obtained in the period prior to the COVID 19 pandemic with those recorded during it. | en_US |
