Velocidad de marcha y capacidad funcional en adultos mayores de un centro poblado, Lima 2024

Abstract

OBJETIVO: Determinar la relación entre la velocidad de marcha y la capacidad funcional en adultos mayores de un centro poblado en Lima, 2024. METODOLOGÍA: Se utilizó un diseño observacional, correlacional y transversal, con un enfoque cuantitativo y basado en el método hipotético-deductivo. La muestra estuvo conformada por 80 adultos mayores de un centro poblado, seleccionados mediante un muestreo censal. Se aplicaron el Índice de Barthel y la Escala de Lawton y Brody para evaluar la capacidad funcional, y el Test de Velocidad de Marcha de 4 Metros para medir la velocidad de marcha. RESULTADOS: El 65% de los adultos mayores presentó velocidad de marcha reducida. En cuanto a la capacidad funcional, el 51.2% fue independiente en actividades básicas de la vida diaria, y el 91.2% en actividades instrumentales. Se encontró una relación estadísticamente significativa entre la velocidad de marcha y la capacidad funcional (p < 0.005). CONCLUSIÓN: Existe una relación significativa entre la velocidad de marcha y la capacidad funcional en adultos mayores. La mayoría presentó velocidad de marcha reducida, pero mantuvo independencia funcional en distintas actividades.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between walking speed and functional capacity in older adults from a population center in Lima, 2024. METHODOLOGY: An observational, correlational and cross-sectional design was used, with a quantitative approach and based on the hypothetical-deductive method. The sample consisted of 80 older adults from a population center, selected through census sampling. The Barthel Index and the Lawton and Brody Scale were applied to assess functional capacity, and the 4-Meter Walking Speed Test to measure walking speed. RESULTS: 65% of older adults had reduced walking speed. Regarding functional capacity, 51.2% were independent in basic activities of daily living, and 91.2% in instrumental activities. A statistically significant relationship was found between walking speed and functional capacity (p < 0.005). CONCLUSION: There is a significant relationship between walking speed and functional capacity in older adults. Most of them had reduced walking speed, but maintained functional independence in different activities.
