Importance placed on breastfeeding and breastfeeding technique in children under 2 years old

Abstract

The main objective of the research was to determine the relationship between the importance given to breastfeeding and the breastfeeding technique used by mothers of children under 2 years old attended at the Los Libertadores Health Center in 2014. It was a descriptive, correlational cross-sectional study. The population consisted of 60 mothers. The results showed that 45% of the mothers who assigned low importance to breastfeeding practiced an inadequate breastfeeding technique, while 61% of the mothers who assigned moderate importance applied a moderately adequate technique, and finally, 44% of the mothers who assigned high importance used an adequate technique. It was also observed that 33% of mothers gave low importance to breastfeeding, 52% gave moderate importance, and 15% gave high importance. Regarding breastfeeding techniques, 30% of mothers employed an inadequate breastfeeding technique, 50% a moderately adequate technique, and 20% an adequate technique. The main conclusions were that there is a direct relationship (p-value = 0.050) between the importance assigned to breastfeeding and the breastfeeding technique employed by the mothers. Additionally, the importance that mothers give to breastfeeding is generally from low to moderate, with a minority considering it to be high. In terms of the breastfeeding technique employed, the majority is moderately adequate, followed by inadequate, and a minority is adequate.

El principal objetivo de la investigación fue determinar la relación entre la importancia que concedieron a la lactancia materna y la técnica de amamantamiento que emplearon las madres de niños menores de 2 años atendidos en el Centro de Salud Los Libertadores en el 2014. Fue un estudio descriptivo, correlacional de corte transversal. La población estuvo constituida por 60 madres. Los resultados mostraron que 45% de las madres que le brindaron importancia baja a la lactancia materna realizaron una técnica inadecuada de amamantamiento, mientras que 61% de las madres que le brindaron importancia media aplicaron una técnica moderadamente adecuada y finalmente 44% de madres que le brindaron importancia alta emplearon una técnica adecuada. Asi mismo se observo que 33% de las madres brindaron baja importancia a la lactancia materna, 52% importancia media y 15% importancia alta. Sobre las técnicas de amamantamiento el 30% de las madres emplearon una técnica inadecuada de amamantamiento, 50% una técnica moderadamente adecuada, y 20% una técnica adecuada. Las principales conclusiones fueron que existe relación directa (p valor= 0.050) entre la importancia concedida a la lactancia materna y la técnica de amamantamiento empleada por las madres, así mismo la importancia que le conceden las madres a la lactancia materna es de media a baja y una minoría alta, en cuanto a la técnica de amamantamiento empleada en su mayoría es medianamente adecuada, seguida de inadecuada y una minoría adecuada.
