Vertical dimension of occlusion and length of the fingers of the hand according to facial biotype in dentistry students at the Norbert Wiener University – Lima, 2023

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) and the length of the fingers in dental students according to facial biotype. A correlational methodology was used, where morphometric data were collected from a sample of 157 undergraduate dental students, from the 8th to the 9th semester. The Facial Morphological Index (FMI) was used to describe the facial biotype of the students, considering facial height and width, determining the VDO, and classifying them into brachyfacial, mesofacial, and dolichofacial categories. Additionally, the length of the fingers on the right hand was recorded. The results showed that all correlation coefficients (Rho) between VDO and finger length measurements and the distance between the thumb and index were positive and statistically significant (p-value < 0.05). This indicates a positive and statistically significant correlation between VDO and finger length measurements and the distance between the thumb and index. In conclusion, this study supports the existence of a significant relationship between the vertical dimension of occlusion and finger length in dental students according to their facial biotype.

El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la relación entre la dimensión vertical de la oclusión (DVO) y la longitud de los dedos de la mano en alumnos de odontología según biotipo facial. Se utilizó una metodología correlacional en la cual se recolectaron datos morfométricos de una muestra de 157 alumnos de pregrado pertenecientes a la carrera de Odontología, del 8vo al 9no ciclo. Se utilizó el Índice Morfológico Facial (IMF) para describir el biotipo facial de los estudiantes, teniendo en cuenta la altura y el ancho facial, determinando la DVO y clasificándolos en braquifacial, mesofacial y dolicofacial; además, se registró la longitud de los dedos de la mano derecha. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron que todos los coeficientes de correlación (Rho) entre la DVO y las medidas de longitud de los dedos y la distancia entre el pulgar e índice fueron positivos y significativos (p-valor < 0.05). Esto indica que existe una correlación positiva y estadísticamente significativa entre la DVO y las medidas de longitud de los dedos y la distancia entre el pulgar e índice. En conclusión, este estudio respalda la existencia de una relación significativa entre la dimensión vertical de la oclusión y la longitud de los dedos de la mano en alumnos de odontología del biotipo facial.
