Antibacterial efficacy of traditional toothpaste vs phytotherapy toothpaste against Streptococcus mutans in vitro

Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the antibacterial efficacy of traditional toothpaste versus phytotherapeutic toothpaste against Streptococcus mutans. An in vitro experimental study was conducted using the Kirby-Bauer technique with the agar diffusion method. The sample consisted of 20 blood agar Petri dishes inoculated with the Streptococcus mutans ATC 25175 strain. On their surface, 40 antibiogram discs impregnated with supernatants of traditional and phytotherapeutic toothpastes were placed, and the inhibition halo formation was evaluated after 48 hours. Results: Both toothpastes exhibited antibacterial efficacy against Streptococcus mutans. The phytotherapeutic toothpaste showed greater inhibition efficacy, with an inhibition halo of 14.21 mm, compared to the traditional toothpaste, which had an inhibition halo of 10.57 mm, with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The phytotherapeutic toothpaste demonstrated greater antibacterial efficacy against Streptococcus mutans.

El presente trabajo de investigación tuvo como objetivo determinar la eficacia antibacteriana de la pasta dental tradicional vs la pasta dental fitoterápica frente al Streptococcus mutans. Se desarrolló un estudio experimental in vitro, empleando la técnica de Kirby Bauer con el método de difusión en agar. La muestra estuvo conformada por 20 placas Petri con Agar sangre, inoculada con la cepa ATC 25175 de Streptococcus mutans; y se depositó sobre su superficie 40 discos de antibiograma, impregnados con los sobrenadantes de pastas dentales, tradicional y fitoterápica, evaluándose a las 48 horas, por la formación del halo de inhibición. Se encontró como resultado, que ambas pastas dentales presentaron eficacia antibacteriana frente al Streptococcus mutans, presentando la pasta dental fitoterápica mayor eficacia de inhibición frente al Streptococcus mutans con un halo de inhibición de 14.21 mm, en comparación con la pasta dental tradicional con un halo de inhibición de 10.57 mm, con una diferencia estadísticamente significativa (p menor 0.05). Se concluye que la pasta dental fitoterápica tuvo mayor eficacia antibacteriana frente al Streptococcus mutans.
