Effectiveness of the educational program “Eye Health“ in self-caring in caregivers of the largest post-taked adult of cataract at the National Institute of Oftalmology 2018

Abstract

Objective: To determine the effectiveness of the educational program "Eye Health" in self-care among caregivers of elderly patients who underwent cataract surgery at the National Institute of Ophthalmology in 2018. Methodology: A study with a quantitative design, quasi-experimental method. A prospective, longitudinal study, with a sample of 45 caregivers. The instrument used was the application of a questionnaire and checklist, with prior informed consent. Results: In the pre-test, 100% had a low level of knowledge regarding self-care. Regarding practice, 100% did not apply knowledge of self-care. In the post-test, after the intervention, 60% achieved a moderate level of knowledge, and 31.1% achieved a high level of knowledge about self-care. Regarding self-care practice, after the educational intervention, 100% applied the knowledge. Thus, the effectiveness of the educational program was evident. The Wilcoxon Z test (-5.862) was used, finding a statistically significant result (p = 0.000).

Conclusions: The educational program "Eye Health" was effective in increasing caregivers' knowledge about postoperative care for cataract surgery patients. After the educational program, most caregivers understood that warning signs and symptoms include pain and red eye. They learned that after surgery, they should consider mobility restrictions, avoid lifting heavy objects, and that eye drops should be applied after washing hands, shaking the drops, and applying them to the operated eye. A 10-minute waiting period between applications of each drop improves absorption.

Objetivo: Determinar la efectividad del programa educativo “Salud ocular” en el autocuidado en cuidadores del adulto mayor post operado de catarata en el Instituto Nacional de Oftalmología 2018. Metodología: Estudio con diseño cuantitativo, método cuasi experimental. Estudio prospectivo, longitudinal, la muestra está conformada por 45 cuidadores. El instrumento fue la aplicación de un cuestionario y lista de check list previo consentimiento informado. Resultado: En el pretest, el 100% obtuvo un nivel bajo de conocimiento en el autocuidado. En cuanto a la práctica el 100% no aplica sobre el conocimiento del autocuidado. En el postest después de la intervención el 60% obtuvo un nivel de conocimiento moderado, 31.1% obtuvo un nivel de conocimiento alto en el autocuidado. En cuanto la práctica del autocuidado, después de la intervención educativa el 100% aplica. De esta manera, se evidenció la efectividad del programa educativo. Se utilizó la prueba estadística test de Wilcoxon Z (-5,862) hallando un (p= 0,000). Altamente significativo. Conclusiones: El programa educativo salud ocular fue efectivo en el incremento de conocimientos del cuidador sobre los cuidados postoperatorio del paciente operado de catarata, después del programa educativo la mayoría conocen que el signo y síntoma de alarma es el dolor, ojo rojo, que luego de la cirugía debe tener en cuenta en la movilización, no levantar objetos pesados y que las gotas oftálmicas deben aplicarse, previo lavado de manos, agitar las gotas y aplicar al ojo operado, esperar 10 minutos para aplicación entre gota y gota mejorando la absorción de ambas gotas
