Academic performance and factors contributing to university dropout among nursing students at a private university in 2018

Abstract

Objective: Determine the relationship between academic performance and university dropout factors in nursing students from a Private University in 2018. Material and Method: quantitative, descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional approach. The sample was 105 students who abandoned their studies in two semesters of study (period 2016 I and 2016 II). A validated instrument was used with Cronbach's alpha with a value of r = 0.853, Spearman's Rho of sig. 0.049, less than 0.05, therefore there is a relationship between academic performance and university dropout. Results: it was found that 54% have low academic performance, 44% have average performance and 2% have excellent performance. On the other hand, among the dropout factors that were found, the economic factor was the one that prevailed in 46%, followed by the academic factor in 32% and the social cultural factor in 22%. Conclusions: It was found that more than Half of the students had low academic performance and of these, half dropped out due to economic factors.

Objetivo: Determinar la relación entre el rendimiento académico y los factores de abandono universitario en estudiantes de enfermería de una Universidad Privada en el año 2018.Material y Método: enfoque cuantitativo, descriptivo, retrospectivo, de corte transversal. La muestra fue de 105 alumnos que abandonaron sus estudios en dos semestres de estudios (periodo 2016 I y 2016 II).Se utilizó un instrumento validado con alfa de cronbach de valor de r = 0,853, Rho de Spearman de sig. 0.049, menor a 0.05 por ello hay relación entre rendimiento académico y abandono universitario. Resultados: se encontró que el 54% presentan un rendimiento académico bajo, el 44% un rendimiento promedio y el 2% un rendimiento excelente. Por otro lado, dentro los factores de abandono que se encontró, el factor económico fue el que prevaleció en un 46%, seguida del factor académico en un 32% y el factor social cultural en un 22%.Conclusiones: Se encontró que más de la mitad de los alumnos tuvieron un rendimiento académico bajo y de estos la mitad abandonó por factor económico.
