Effectiveness of magnesium sulfate in the treatment of asthma attacks in pediatric patients

Abstract

Objectives: Analyze and systematize the evidence on the effectiveness of magnesium sulfate in the treatment of asthmatic attacks in pediatric patients. Material and Methods: Systematic reviews, double-blind randomized trial, articles were analyzed and criticized; Choosing 10 articles where 70% are systematic reviews and 30% double-blind controlled trials; in countries such as 30% China, 20% United Kingdom, 20% USA, 10% Argentina, 10% Canada and 10% Brazil. Results: Of the articles analyzed, 80% stated that magnesium sulfate is effective in the treatment of asthmatic attacks in pediatric patients and 20% did not find a significant improvement in lung function or a decrease in hospital admissions during the asthmatic crisis. Conclusions: It was evident in the scientific articles reviewed that the use of magnesium sulfate during asthma attacks improves lung function and reduces hospital admissions in pediatric patients.

Objetivos: Analizar y sistematizar las evidencias sobre la eficacia del sulfato de magnesio en el tratamiento de la crisis asmática en pacientes pediátricos. Material y Métodos: Revisiones sistemáticas, ensayo aleatorizado doble ciego, los artículos se analizaron y criticaron; eligiéndose 10 artículos donde el 70% son revisiones sistemáticas y el 30% ensayos controlados doble ciego; en países como el 30% China, 20% Reino Unido, 20% E.E.U.U, 10% Argentina, 10% Canadá y 10% Brasil. Resultados: De los artículos analizados el 80% afirman que el sulfato de magnesio es efectivo en tratamiento de la crisis asmática en los pacientes pediátricos y el 20% no encontró una mejoría significativa en la función pulmonar ni disminución de ingresos hospitalarios durante la crisis asmática. Conclusiones: Se evidencio en los artículos científicos revisado que el uso de sulfato de magnesio durante la crisis asmática mejora la función pulmonar y reduce los ingresos hospitalarios en los pacientes pediátricos.
