Efficacy of using ultrasonography for the success of peripheral catheterization in patients with difficult venous access

Abstract

Objective: Systematize the evidence on the effectiveness of ultrasonography for the success of peripheral catheterization in patients with difficult venous access. Material and methods: This is a systematic review, where 10 scientific articles were reviewed, which were obtained from reliable sources such as scientific journals from around the world, mostly in English. Scientific articles were included that were related to the success or otherwise of peripheral venous cannulations through the use of ultrasonography guidance. Results: Of the 10 articles reviewed in this research, we can conclude that in 8 of the 10 articles reviewed it is mentioned that ultrasonography increases the success rate of peripheral catheterization, reducing the number of attempts, the time used and facilitating the insertion of larger caliber catheters, as well as in the other 2 remaining articles, it is concluded that the successful cannulations obtained in them were the same with or without the use of ultrasonography as a guide. Conclusion: The use of ultrasound guidance increases the success rate in the cannulation of peripheral intravenous lines, especially in patients with difficult venous access.

Objetivo: Sistematizar la evidencia sobre la eficacia de la ultrasonografía para el éxito del cateterismo periférico en pacientes con acceso venoso difícil. Material y métodos: El presente es una revisión sistemática, donde se revisaron 10 artículos científicos, lo cuales fueron obtenidos de fuentes confiables como revistas científicas de todo el mundo, en su mayoría en idioma inglés. Se incluyeron artículos científicos que tuvieran relación con el éxito o no de las canalizaciones venosas periféricas mediante el uso de la guía con ultrasonografía. Resultados: De los 10 artículos revisados en esta investigación, podemos concluir que en 8 de los 10 artículos revisados se menciona que la ultrasonografía aumenta la tasa de éxito de las canalizaciones de vías periféricas, disminuyendo el número de intentos, el tiempo utilizado y facilitando la inserción de catéteres de mayor calibre, así como en los otros 2 artículos restantes se concluye que las canalizaciones exitosas obtenidas en ellos fueron igual con o sin el uso de la ultrasonografía como guía. Conclusión: El uso de la guía con ultrasonido aumenta la tasa de éxito en la canalización de vías periféricas endovenosas, especialmente en pacientes con difícil acceso venoso.
