Effectiveness of thermal mattresses in preventing hypothermia in premature or low-birth-weight newborns

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To systematically analyze the evidence on the effectiveness of the thermal mattress in preventing hypothermia in premature or low birth weight newborns. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This study uses a systematic review of 10 articles about the effectiveness of the thermal mattress in preventing hypothermia in premature or low birth weight newborns, which were found in the following databases: Pubmed , Sciencedirect, Epistemonikos, Cochrane Plus, Medline, Dialnet, Scielo. All articles used in this review were analyzed according to the Grade scale to determine their strength and quality of evidence. RESULTS: 100% of reviewed articles are conclusive. However, some authors suggest the use of a thermal mattress used autonomously and others that it be combined with some other intervention, but always monitoring the temperature to prevent iatrogenic hyperthermia. CONCLUSIONS: 100% (10/10) of the scientific articles in this study show that the use of thermal mattresses in premature and low birth weight newborns; It is effective for the prevention of hypothermia. The use of the thermal mattress simultaneously with the polyethylene bag provides warmth to the premature or low birth weight newborn, preventing hypothermia, but continuous monitoring must be carried out to avoid iatrogenic hyperthermia.

OBJETIVO: Analizar sistemáticamente las evidencias sobre la efectividad del colchón térmico en la prevención de la hipotermia en el recién nacido prematuro o de bajo peso al nacer. MATERIAL Y MÉTODO: Este estudio utiliza la revisión sistemática de 10 artículos acerca de la eficacia del colchón térmico en la prevención de la hipotermia en el recién nacido prematuro o de bajo peso al nacer, los cuales fueron hallados en las siguientes bases de datos: Pubmed, Sciencedirect,Epistemonikos, Cochrane Plus, Medline, Dialnet, Scielo.Todos los artículos usados en esta revisión fueron analizados según la escala Grade para determinar su fuerza y calidad de evidencia. RESULTADOS: El 100% de artículos revisados son concluyentes. Sin embargo, algunos autores sugieren el uso de colchón térmico usado autónomamente y otros que sean combinado con alguna otra intervención, pero siempre monitorizando la temperatura para prevenir hipertermias iatrogénicas. CONCLUSIONES: El 100% (10/10) de los artículos científicos de este estudio, evidencia que el uso del colchón térmico en los recién nacidos prematuros y de bajo peso al nacer; es efectivo para la prevención de la hipotermia. El uso del colchón térmico en simultaneo con la bolsa de polietileno, brinda calor al recién nacido prematuro o de bajo peso al nacer, logrando prevenir la hipotermia, pero se debe de realizar una monitorización continua para evitar las hipertermias iatrogénicas.
